Cedar Planter Boxes

My wife asked if we could make some planter boxes like she saw in this YouTube video:  Since I've managed to accumulate a nice collection of Festool equipment I was happy to oblige.

I made some modifications to the design from what I saw in the YouTube video.  The planter boxes are made out of cedar fence pickets and cedar 2x4s.  Somewhere in the process things got quite out of square (I think when we struggled to get the pocket screws into the narrow side), but I like to think of them as being "rustic."  If you don't look too closely, they look pretty good.  Plus I figure these will likely age and get fairly beat up being exposed to the elements.  We looked at some commercially available cedar planters from Home Depot, but they honestly looked even worse than mine and they weren't necessarily the size that we wanted, plus they ended up being more expensive than the ones I made.

All in all it was a fun little project to build as a couple.

They don't look nearly as nice as [member=39612]OXCanada[/member] though:http://festoolownersgroup.com/member-projects/cedar-planters/.  I will say that the flowers look very similar.

They look great.  They look like they'll stand the test of time with ease.  I miss the smell of working with cedar because in my area Redwood is more common. ( I also noticed the Bosch Flexi-Click in your photos.  I love mine and have now Systainerized it.)

This is my first time working with cedar.  It was actually hard for me to find.  I needed to go to a Lowes that was about 17 miles from my house as it was the only big box store somewhat nearby that carried the cedar pickets.  Home Depot only had pressure treated pickets and 2x4s.  I wondered if an actual lumber yard would have stocked cedar, but I didn't bother to check.  The whole garage did have a lovely cedar smell do it, especially after some of the boards had been cut.

I don't know if this is normal or not, but the cedar 2x4 was not the standard 1.5" x 3.5" sizing.  This was 1.75" and 3.75".  That posed a little bit of a problem since the Kreg pocket holes and screws were designed for the regular 2x4 dimensions.

Yup, I was using the Flexi-Click to help get the pocket screw into the narrow side.  At one point I had the offset chuck inserted into the 90 degree chuck in an effort to try to find the best combination and angle of attack to drive the screw in.  It is a real work horse, especially for only being 12volts.  My wife was using the CXS to screw in the stainless steel screws while I was using the Flexi-Click to predrill the holes.  It was a real tag team effort.

I love my Kreg Mobile Project Centers!  My wife got me 2 of them for our wedding anniversary almost 2 years ago.  She bought them from Acme Tools with a Veteran's day coupon code.  I believe Acme Tools should be offering a discount coupon for the 4th of July soon.  They are very stable (more stable than my MFT/3 and also a lot lighter in weight) and I often use them with the bench dogs as the base for the custom tops I made with my Parf Guide System as you probably saw in some of my pictures.  I also use them by themselves as a worktable.  I store them on 16" shelf brackets that I already have in my garage.  Please feel free to ask any questions you might have about the Kreg Mobile Project Centers.  They really are great.

We had some leftover cedar pickets so I ripped some ~1" strips and made a little trellis for another plant that she has.  The garden center was charging $15 bucks for the same thing.

I had some leftover wood from the initial build of the 2 planters.  I realized that I had just enough material to make 1 more planter box.  I made this one 15" x 15" x 15".  I really dragged my feet finishing this up because I was scared of making a mistake since I had no extra materials if I screwed something up.
