I paid a visit to the local Woodcraft store to get a feel for the size difference between the OF 1010 and OF1400, as I will likely be purchasing one of them in the near future.  I found it odd that there were several unaccompanied younger women streaming out of the store with smiles on their faces as I was entering as the store.  Some of these ladies were looking intently at their cell phones or digital cameras while walking out, which was particularly odd.  Were they giddy about the beautiful industrial design of the Kapex, or smitten with the organizational possibilities of the supply of sustainers featured prominently in the store window?  Well, I soon realized that one Tommy Mac(donald) was visiting the store today.  He seemed like a genuinely friendly guy, and even tried to engage me in some chat, which I had to decline as my son was insisting on an immediate visit to the bathroom.

I was surprised with the weight and size difference between the two routers, and still am not sure which one I'll buy.

I've just recently bought the OF 1010. i didn't get a chance to use it till today. Oh Man! I'm in love. That little router is so nice and light, but yet has lots of power for large cuts too.

Im sure you'll get a few comments about the collet sizes between the 1400 and the 1010. and which one is the better all round router to buy. but if you already have a 1/2" collet router, Buy the OF 1010.

My 2 cents.

Benn,
I think I'm with you.  I do have a router that uses 1/2' shank bits (but has no dust collection), so, when necessary I can go to it.  Getting really close on pulling the trigger on the 1010.  There;s always the 30 day return policy if I find myself wishing for a bit more power.

His woodworking show is on PBS and started airing after New Yankee Workshop was taken off the air.

"Rough Cut: Woodworking With Tommy Mac" is sponsored by Woodcraft. It is no longer shown on either of the Los Angeles area PBS stations: KOCE, PBS So Cal; or KLCS, PBS from the Los Angeles City Unified School District.

If I didn't know better, I would have thought Madison to be close to Roswell and that you are a science fiction author.  [doh]

No more New Yankee Workshop  [eek]. What gives ?  Is Norm still doing This Old House ?  Not seen that programme in years.

I think he is still doing This Old House but he gave up New Yankee Workshop. From what I have read it was too much for him to handle both (he is in his 60's now) and This Old House has a wider audience and sponsor base. Apparently the last few years sponsorship was getting tough to get.

The only shows that I know of that are still on are The Woodsmith's Shop, Rough Cut and The Woodwright's Shop but the only one I get on TV is Rough Cut...

I got to see Tommy Mac at the VA Woodworking show last week. I didn't get to talk to him but I was watching his session on using hand scrapers and got some pics.

He's a fine woodworker and seems to be very friendly with people in general. The second season of Rough Cut is better then the first but they still seem to have time constraint issues which that haven't figured out yet so they tend to skip steps in the build they are doing because they want to cover something like the road trip section in more depth. Overall it's a good show though, especially in the vast desert wasteland for woodworking that is NJ.
