Cherry

I found some beautiful cherry in my wood storage. I want to make a gift jewelry box for a friend. I’ve had problems in the past with cherry blotching. My go to finish is MinWax Wipe On Poly.

Suggestions?

Please remember it is a piece of wood not a piece of plastic. Cherry always has wild and distinct result with most finishes. Does it appear blotchy? I think it results in a distinctive and an extremely beautiful array of color. Embrace it.

If you are not staining the cherry just apply the poly. If you are staining let us know, a whole different process.

If you want to know what it will look like prior to applying the finish, sand with the grain to 150, wipe with mineral spirts.

If you are not staining, Cherry is as easy as any other common hardwood, Poly, water-based poly, Oil, wax-Oil, etc.
It's the stain that will cause issues. If you are not looking for a dramatic change, just darker, a few hours outside in direct sunlight will oxidize it surprisingly quickly. Turning to keep the exposure even helps too.
As long as it's not stained, that darkening will happen anyway, it just takes longer without the sun's help.
