When clamping a picture frame for sanding, etc, if I use the base pieces with the flat side against one rail when clamping the picture frame,

and then the clamps against the same rail, the other side of the frame will raise up off the MFT.

But if I use the curved portion of the base pieces, it doesn't.

Try it.
 
Interesting, I will try that. Normally, I just "half-clamp" the workpiece to avoid it lifting. I only open the pivoting arm on the clamp half-way before sliding it up to the workpiece, then when I tighten it the clamping pressure is less but just enough to hold things stable for sanding.
 
Notice how the curved section is not plumb, but rather the top leans out towards your workpiece to encounter it first…
