Cleaning sheepskin pad [Success]

Anyone had success with cleaning their sheepskin pad?:

Can I just use some Woolite or similar detergent made specifically for wool?  Or do I need something more specialized?

I never cleaned a sheepskin pad, but I do suggest you don't use any soap or detergent because those do not play well with finishing products.

The first things I'd try are ammonia solution and thinner. Both are very good for cleaning, by dissolving grease, and both leave no residue.

How you clean it is more dependent on what you have been using it with. If it's wax, for example, I would use a gentle solvent to remove the wax, then rinse it well and put it in the tumble dryer on low heat.

There is a tool for it, I use the side of a screwdriver. In 45 years of using a buffer I have yet to wash a pad with soap or cleaner of any kind.

Just an update on my successful experiment with a product known as "Serious Pad Cleaner."  Took out the built up wax and oil after a 15min. soak and light brushing.  Pads are as good as new.
