Closet Renovation and Kids shelves

I just wrapped up this install this morning. The old closet wasn't very functional or aesthetically pleasing. The carcass for the chest of drawers was put together with dominos and pocket screws. I used the LR32 on the uppers. The chip free cut offered by the router bit was a huge plus since I drilled the holes after I had painted the mdf. Had I done it the other way around the holes would've swelled too much.
The wall shelves were an easy but fun build. They're modelled after some Pottery Barn shelves that the customer liked with a few changes.

Pretty sweet!  I've done a little of that reverse engineering meself.  This out of a Pottery Barn for Teens catalog for my daughter:

ive had two customers give me a page torn out of homes and gardens

This is a beaut - Can you talk about how you constructed your drawer fronts?

The drawer fronts are made of 1/2" mdf.  The edging is 5/8" poplar that's been bullnosed.  The inside detail is just some strips of 1/4" hardboard, mitered at the corners.  Most of the carcase is mdf.  The face frame is poplar and the drawers are beech - it's relatively cheap here ($2/bdft.)  The top is 3/4" mdf except for the edge detail which is a strip of poplar that was dominoed to the edge.

I've had more than a few that say that exact same thing.  The whole idea of getting something custom escapes a lot of people.

there are now two or three generations of people who have no "folk knowledge"

if you want custom furniture........................call a carpenter

well a good carpenter  :    there arnt so many of those around either

no wonder the folk knowledge is being lost
