Coloured latches for systainers.

You can also change color via Rit Dye.  I use it to change RC Heli parts.

Tell us more.  My questions are:  How deep a color can you achieve?  How permanent is it?

Ned

I use it to paint my outdoor furniture (cheap plastic stuff.)  about once a year.  Good color, lasts about a year without ANY covers, etc.  Full sun.  It's faily expensive, about 6 bucks a can.  It costs more than new chairs,  but I can't get new chairs in a color that my honey just has to have!!  I bet it would work well for latches.

I followed up on John's suggestion and went looking for paint that works on plastic and works outdoors.  I found something called "Rust-oleum For Plastic" in a spray can.  I sprayed a couple of the latches and will test them under real working conditions then report back.

The top systainer in the picture below has the sprayed latches.  The one on the bottom has the coloured latches that I mentioned in the first post in this thread.

Ned,
It does not bleed, you can dye blacks, brown, reds, yellows and bunch more.  I will post a Thread on a RC Helicopter Forum, if you search Rit dye you will get 9 pages worth of threads.

Knowing Festool they probably use plastics that are impervious to Rit.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

This RIT dye idea is interesting. Ilooked at the thread you posted. It seems that it is being used on white plastic. I wonder how it would work out on green though. Maybe getting light grey replacement latches would be a better choice for a base color?

Timmy C,

I really think you need to start offering custom Tie Dye systainer latches!!      Or even entire Systainers!  You could call the line The Ultimate Junkie Gear  :D

Seth

Thanks, vtecnical.

Registration is required over at the helicopter forum, so I've copied some info here.  There are many more pictures on that forum.

[Tired of the white gear struts?]  Dye them! I used Rit Royal Blue powder dye.Mixed it in a shallow pan of water, heated on stove top to around 150 degrees, added white gear.I then turned off heat and let it sit for a couple of hours.
Looks real good in person, now I want to try other colors!

There's a color chart at Rit Colors.

I think that the light gray latches (the ones on the sides of Festool Systainers) are better candidates for dyeing than the green ones.  Pity.  I've got a lot of spare green ones.

I have not yet tried this.  Just more info, not an endorsement.

Ned, this may be old news, but here's a place that sells just the gray latches for $3.00 each: Systainers

I know that Festool sells a set of four for $8.50, but you have to take two greens and two grays in that set.

LOL...That would be awesome.  I will put that on the side of my plate right now.  I have a ton going on.  New Tools coming soon, now tie dye latches, and of course, the biggest project of all........Finding someone that will make me a Festool Eye Patch for "The Fred West Collection".......whewwwww, "I am only one man Jim!"

Seth, that is a rather slick idea though!!!  Thanks for pointing it out!  ;D

  Hey Timmy,
How about Tie-dyed Festool shirts.  I'd like that!  They must realize in Europe that we're a little different on this side of the Atlantic already, Right?  Oh & dayglow colored cords in many colors ;D.  Then my cords won't be so visually tangled.

Shhhhhh!!!  Don't tell anyone, but I hear these may be in the works!

That's cool,
I'll keep quiet.  It's just good to know I'll have more things to match with my work socks. ;D

...
Its now 7 months since I sprayed some latches and my two systainers with sprayed latches have been in many places since then.  One was even kicked into the lake  :-[  (not on purpose).  They have held up well and show no wear at all
