butt-jointing paint-grade molding such as mdf/wood base and crown?  It seems the precise registration would lend itself to this task well.  Plywood splints on the back of the crown are a royal PITA.

will work .. but you need to be careful.  Not unlike using a bisquit ... yep it will hold the joint.  However on long pieces of crown/base you need to be careful about flexing the joint and having a hairline crack appear at the joint.  If paint grade not a problem .. but stain grade can be a challenge
