Something a little different.

This isn't my video review of the CTL-SYS, but the exhaust port on the back got me thinking - could you use the vac to supply air to an HVLP spray gun? [blink]

Very interesting videos and certainly gives food for thought for those wishing to do HVLP spraying.

Just one thing, I was wearing amplified headphones to be able to hear you speaking (laptop speakers are pants) and when the Earlex started in video 2 it was much too loud without any warning.  [eek]

Interesting video indeed, Jonny, aren't you afraid the air from the vac might not be clean enough for paint spraying? If I remember anything from my CTL22's exhaust port, that air was nowhere near clean.

The air comes through the fleece filter bag, and then through the main filter, so I don't understand why you think the air wouldn't be clean?

It's certainly a lot cleaner than the air from the Earlex turbine, which is filtered by a 6mm thick piece of foam with holes big enough to stick a pencil through...

I wonder if you could put some kind of coarse filter on the CTL-Sys to move even ore air?  Also, I remember a few years back Festool USA had a survey asking about spay finishing.  I suppose they could be working on a CT based HVLP system already.

Hmm, possibly. Not sure it's necessary, though.

Why it wouldn't be clean? Perhaps because it is from a vacuum cleaner? Or are you going to use the vac only as an HVLP unit, no dusting? Then I could see how it stays clean. Otherwise, used vacs are problably one of the dustiest machines in the arsenal. That's their nature.

I'm not going to dedicate it to spraying, I'll use it for dust extraction 90%+ of the time. Still don't think it will be a problem, like I said it's taking air from the room, filtering it (twice) and then spitting it out, it's going to be more than clean enough. Sure, vacs get dirty, but unless you do something wrong, not on the turbine side of the filter.

Maybe we'll just agree to disagree on that?  [big grin]

Edit: Forgot to add - although I'll use the main unit for both dust extraction and spraying, I won't use the same hose. I'll have a dedicated short hose to use just for spraying, that will be clean!

The Earlex moves 42cfm @ 2.2psi, the Festool 105cfm @ 2.9psi.

I agree with Jonathan. All of the exhaust air has been filtered by the fleece bag and main filter, it is perfectly clean no matter how dirty the bag is.  Thinking this through in normal use, the intake pulls the debris into the vac.  The debris gets captured by the fleece bag.  The intake air continues through the fleece bag where it gets pretty clean, then passes through the main filter where it is completely filtered.  It then passes through the turbine and out the exhaust as perfectly clean air.

Do you know if the Earlex gun and hose can be bought separately? I have been looking at the Earlex but didn't bite the bullet due to it only being a twin turbine setup and potential difficulties in spraying thicker paints. However if I could connect just the gun up to my Bosch extractor's blow outlet this would be significantly more powerful and likely equivalent to a 3 or even 4 turbine unit's power.

I can't find the hose, but the complete gun assembly is available as a spare from the Earlex online shop.

I'm sure they must do the hose too (it's more likely to need replacing than the entire gun, surely?) so maybe give them a call & ask?
