Hi all,

I am looking at setting up a portable workshop and have decided on a number of Festool products including the CTL22.  Following the helpful advice I have received on this and other forums I have come to the conclusion that it makes sense to get some sort of portable/worktop thickenesser.  My question is will the CTL22 cope with this or not?

Thanks for your help

Graham

Hello

I would say no there will be too may chips produced off of a planer/thicknesser.  I suppose you could get the reusable filter bag and empty it constantly. Some here have hooked up through a mini cyclone.  I actually purchased a 1hp dust collecter from steel city to use with my jointer and planer.

Easy fix! I bought a 50liter dust collector bag (spare part) from steel city that I attach with the hose from my shop vac to my Dewalt planer. No additional fan or vacuum needed as the planer already has a pretty strong fan build in.

I use my Festool CTL 22 on my thicknesser and indeed it fills up very quickly. Provided you don't mind emptying it once a day at least, it works fine.

cheers,

Vincent

Joiner/Thicknesser is one of the most chip producing machines (in volume) that I know of. I produced way more than 1 cubic meter (that's 424 cubic feet I think) in a few days when I was doing a walking bridge for my wife (leading to a flagpole).

Using a vacuum that would use disposable bags would kill at least me financially rather too quickly, that's why I've hooked my to a separate dust collector. I empty the bag to plastic 200 l plastic bags, those cost like 2 euros/10 pcs so the costs stay in control. Or empty the bag directly to my trailer.

(Just for the fun of it, picture of the trailer attached with some chips).

You definitely need a cyclone to capture the chips if you're using a thickness planer.  I tend to fill a 40-gallon drum within 20 minutes of planing with my Dewalt contractor planer.

If you get the Dewalt (3 knive model) it has an amazing blower on it, so you only need the following accesory and a garbage can to capture the chips (no vacuum required).
Dewalt 735 Planer - Chip Collector

If you go with another model of planer, I recommend the following cyclone attachment from Lee Valley Tools.  It's not amazing, but it does the trick with a decent Vacuum.
