Hi,
Last weekend, my Festool ctl26e died suddenly after turning on. I bought it in 2020 and used it for private work only. It was not hot nor did it already run for a long time that day. When turning on, I heard something popping behind the operating panel. I've removed the panel and could see an IC is blown up, a peace has popped of.
The IC is located on the left top corner of the print. I would like to replace the IC itself, but because of the black coating and the fact that a peace popped of, I cannot read the specifications of the part. Can anyone help with this? I cannot find any circuit diagram. And what could be causing this defect? Current too high? A replacement board is available, but quite expensive. Didn't expect a professional tool break down that fast...

If you bought it in 2020, it's still under warranty.

Stop messing with it and send it in for a warranty repair.

Getting that epoxy cleaned is going to be a pita, secondly, if it was an IC that blew, you can be assured that other power devices have also failed then for an IC to be taken out. More likely to blow is a power transistor but the cavity doesn't look like a MOSFET or similar was connected there, bit hard to tell though.

As suggested I'd simply send it in for repairs and have the board replaced.

I'd take one step back from that if the warranty is expired (isn't that always the way?) and call Festool and ask about it to see if they have any idea what a more specific cause might be for future reference.  Then if you're reasonably assured that you know how to prevent it from happening again, you can just order the board and replace it at home.  It's simple enough to get to (see also: it's already out) and they're going to charge the same for the part itself whether they install it vs. ship it to you.

If you want/need Festool to diagnose it in their shop, they will usually also replace anything else that is worn past its service life and bring it to almost-new condition, at the added expense of shipping and additional parts and labor.

Thanks all for the advice, I will order the circuit board and replace it myself then. Pretty sure nothing else is worn yet, it has only been used a few times. I only hope the root cause was also on the circuit board.

I would nicely ask if they're offering some goodwill, as circuit boards should not explode.

Also: Circuit boards should not explode, in case that was the power driver for the motor... you might blow a new board instantly.

Can you take the whole print out? Does it have any text on the bottom?
