can anyone say how the ctm and ctl extractors differ, apart from the festool specifications regarding extraction efficency are they built to different standards or does it come down to the filter, would the ctl model be just as good as the ctm if it was fitted with a better filter,i would be cutting mdf so would the ctl offer enough protection for this very fine dust?

hi skinee, and welcome to the forum.
the ctl is designed to handle mdf dust particles with ease, no problems whatsoever.
the ctm is designed to handle concrete dust and fibre cement dust which is finer than mdf.
however i have heard of guys here in australia using the ctl vacs with concrete dust and they reckon it does the job perfectly. i have never tried this myself, but i am confident the cheaper festool vac will handle the more finer concrete dust.

regards, justin.

A key difference is that the Ms have an alarm that senses if the airflow is too slow (presumably because the bag is full).  The extra knob on the front is used to tell the machine the diameter of hose used, so it can work out the airspeed.

Skinee, when I first saw there where CTL and CTM models I also wondered why this was and started to google around, read about it and ask questions on forums and in the store.

From what I've heard the only difference between the two models is that the CTM has an additional feature that monitors the airflow through the hose. This way it will detect when suction goes down because of a full dust bag. This feature makes it fall into the M category of vacs because if you change out the bag in time the vac will always suck the small particles of the M category.

L category = dust particles  with MAC values > 1 mg/m?
M category =  dust particles with MAC values > 0.1 mg/m?

So what it comes down to is that the CTL is most of the time a CTM vac until the dust bag becomes clogged so that the suction of the CTL diminishes. When the suction diminishes, the vac is no longer able to suck up the smallest particles.

Are you sure about this justin? I've never heard this. I think the CTL models do just as good for concrete dust as the CTM models since they got the exact same filters.

hi alex, i was given this information by a festool dealer. i trust him but everybody can make a mistake. if anyone else can confirm this, that would be great.

I had a quick look on the Festool UK website at the consumables; the bags and filters for the CTL and CTM look the same.

I think it's just the airflow alarm...

many thanks for all your replies,i think the ctl model is essentially the same as the ctm apart from the alarm,i will be sure to change the filter in good time so it will fine for my use.
