Custom Router Base Plates

Just a follow-up note - I was in contact with the good folks at Leigh Jigs about the challenge in centering the bushing under the OF 1010's collet, and was told that their adapter plate #704R was designed specifically to have some flexibility in its positioning.  I ordered one from Highland Woodworking.  It arrived today with two pan-head screws which do permit some lateral movement.  I tried it on my OF 1010 using the Whiteside 7/16" brass guide bushing and associated mandrel, and to my delight, it worked perfectly.  I am now able to center the bushing on the mandrel.  WOO-HOO!!!  This is the $29.99 fix (plus shipping and handling, of course). 

Regarding Pat Warner, I have a ton of respect for curmudgeons that flat know their stuff.  OK, sometimes they seem hard to get along with, but their knowledge gives weight to their insistence on high standards.  Blessings on curmudgeons!!!

This is extremely helpful information.  Thanks Spark.  I've just ordered up the same package.  I didn't have the cone-shaped mandrel so I ordered one of those too.  This information is clearly presented on the Leigh website and in the very detailed User Guide, but I initially tried to use the variable E7 bushing which came with the jig (I bought it pre-owned).  I only recently started using the DT jig and made one trial drawer with decent but definitely not perfect results.  Hopefully this solution will be better.

With this [hopefully] more accurate solution for the Leigh jig, I am doubting the interest level in the custom base plate from Pat Warner.  If I'm wrong about that, please let me know.  Having started down the path I'm still willing to lead the project with Pat if there's a critical mass of interest.  I have gotten an immense amount of help from this community and I seldom have anything useful to give back.  If this is my chance, then so be it!  - Brian

For those of you thinking of having Pat make a custom base for the of1010, instead of sending him a complete router (or base) for a pattern,  could you just scan or photo copy the base and mail it to him?  I've seen it work great on other items such as gaskets and it seems like it be easier for both parties.

Simply based on my brief interactions with Pat, I don't think this is an approach that he would consider.  I'm being as gentle as I know how to be....  [big grin]

I agree. Pat is a perfectionist which I appreciate. He will require the actual router as a scanned image might not be accurate to the precision level he demands.
