CXS Compact Cordless Drill - Post your questions here!

  Thanks,I missed that.
So they made the plastic housing first, but the absolutely brilliant brushless motor wouldn't fit ?? Why design with a size limitation that will sacrifice all of the brushless benefits, to reduce the width by what,a few millimeters?? Sorry , but i still dont , and probably wont get it.Cant wait to see the rest of the new drill line here though. [smile]

It would have no longer been a compact drill if it had a brushless motor. It would have been a C12/15, which we will have later this year.

If brushless is what you want, we have a broad range of drills with brushless motors with more coming soon.  [wink]

If you want compact, technology has not progress to the point of being able to (at least at a reasonable price point) fit a brushless motor in a compact drill form factor.

I just pre ordered the mini and after all the festools i have , and all the amazing revelations ive had useing them., i must say , if they decided that brushes where the way to go, then thats good enough for me. I demo'd it at woodworld and omg , forget about it. The guys there put 187 screws in an unpiloted board on one battry. Besides, my hilti 15 amp has brushes and i used it for 5 years now, even to mix mud and drill 3/4 " holes threw concrete and its still kicking.

We were using the CXS in the Door & Drawers class today in Henderson. It is a very cool little drill. Very light and compact but it still has enough power. Cannot wait to get mine next week.

OK, so the drill has an LED light, can anyone confirm if the light has a timer to keep it(the light) on for a few seconds after a trigger pull , (never realized how much i would love that feature until I used it !) or do you need to keep the drill spinning for any light (is it useless) ?

The LED turns off immediately when you release the trigger.  Also, you can turn it on by lightly depressing the trigger and it'll stay on as long as you hold it that way.  That works well for me as you get used to it.  I could see a delayed-off LED being very useful, though, too.

....The problem with the Metabo motors was the that the brushes actually wore out, wore down to nothing.  So that is a concern of mine......

On Festool's power tools they use auto stop brushes.  Before these brushes completely ware out they stop the motor preventing any damage.  Just replace the brushes and your good to go.  I'll let Shane ask Lester if the drills use this same type of brush.

Are the brushes user replacable?

I don't know if this ever got answered, but would like to know if the brushes are user replaceable, and if not what does it cost to have them replaced from Festool service? I just replaced a set in my Dewalt after it put on an awesome smoke and light show. It was an easy and cheap fix on that drill, but my wife seen it smoking and agreed I need a new drill, so I'm ordering this drill  [wink]

Every part of a powertool is user replaceable if you know how a screwdriver works. Whether you feel confident enough to do this yourself is a different question.  [cool]

But Festool machines usually don't have these easy access slots on the side to replace the brushes. You will have to open the casing.

True.

I just looked at mine, Rob, and it appears that there are 7 screws holding the two halves of the case together. I strongly suspect that will give you access to the brushes.

Festool brushes generally die suddenly rather catastrophically. I looked in EKAT for more detail but the drill isn't in there yet that I found.

the CXS is on the UK EKAT site.

It looks like the brushes are not replaceable - here is the motor assembly:

Looks to me like a proprietary motor (possibly a 540) and the brushes are inside the motor housing, and are not replaceable. I'm guessing it'd be a case of replacing the whole motor. The cost of the motor itself is listed, and at £36 it's not too horrendous.

Are the CXS drills shipping yet in North America?  A few weeks back Tom B. and others noted that "the CXS drills have arrived" but my preferred local dealer, who has a large and rather complete Festool inventory, hasn't received his first unit yet.
