CXS Wobble Normal?

Hey guys,

I just bought my first festool drill. The CXS. For those of you who have the CXS, or any festool drill for that matter, do the bits wobble?

I took a couple of videos to show what I am referring to. Festool advertises their drills as precision. This doesn't look like precision to me. Should I return the CXS?

This is normal with the Centrotec system there is always a minute bit of play. It has no influence whatsoever on the precision of the drill.

When you drive a screw or drill a hole the bit is in contact on two sides, and not with one side in the air like you do now. When the tip is in contact with the material, there is no possibility for it to wander.

There is nothing to worry about.

I have the same drill, not nearly as much wobble as yours. I would at least take it to your dealer to compare against some others.

just got the newer cxs and it does not wobble like yours. your centrotec adapter is wobbly as hell. swap the adapter out for another and see

With that wobble and my shaky hands, I wood never find the screw head.  [unsure]

My CXS doesn't do that. And the issue is not so much with screwdriver bits, but with drill bits as you could have an oversized hole.

Another vote for "mine doesn't do that". I've had easily corrected wobble in my bits, but never in the bit holder as in your video.

I have just purchased the same machine and mine doesn't have that wobble on it so something is amiss.

I'm sure your dealer will get it sorted.

As I mentioned in another thread I am 1500 miles away from my tools but it looks to me that the green ring has not snapped down into place.  I very well could be wrong.

Well just for fun I pulled out my C15, T18, PDC and CSX. First I tested the T18, then the PDC and then the C15. All were straight as an arrow (I was using a Centrotec 1/2" Brad-Point drill bit with the Centrotec chuck of course). Then I tested my CSX, there seemed to be considerable wobble (you could really feel it vibrating the drill at full RPM too). So I took the bit out of the chuck and put on a different Centrotec chuck, same problem. So then I put in a Festool CE #1 Phillips Bit (after changing to the original Centrotec chuck again) and it was straight as an arrow. So I switched to a smaller Centrotec Brad-Point bit, and it was straight as an arrow too... Then I finally put the 1/2" Brad-Point drill bit back in the chuck and voila! IT WAS STRAIGHT TOO!

I'm not saying Icecactus is experiencing user error, but for some reason I can't seem to get consistency with Centrotec Chucks with Centrotec Bits. I noticed this once before with my PDC too. Maybe the 3 bearings in the Centrotec Chuck don't always fully engage the lip on the main axle shaft of the drill?

Anyway Icecactus, if you can't get it worked out I would exchange that drill for another. Now that I have mine working nicely I can tell you that I'm getting less wobble than that. Your second video was the nail in the coffin for me. Personally I don't like judging 1/4" bits + bit adapters for wobble. Just in case though, try playing around with it some more. Maybe something isn't seated right like it was in my case?

So, i took the drill and put a dial indicator on the shaft of the drill. There is zero detectable run out. So, it has to be in the chuck, or with how the chuck mates to the shaft.

I actually have 3 centrotec chucks. 2 of which were purchased in the installer kit from toolnut back in December 2014 when they had them on sale. I bought the kit knowing I was going to purchase a drill eventually. I finally bought the CXS last month.

It wobbles with all 3 centrotec chucks. So either I am a moron and can't figure out how to properly seat the chuck or maybe I got the short end of the stick with the tolerance range.

Remove the chuck at install the bit directly into the drill and see what happens.

I wobbles like crazy. Much worse then in centrotec chuck. Its a very sloppy fit.

I spoke with festool service and have sent it in for repair. We'll see what happens.

Take it to a deal and do a comparison.
I add the toe on my TS 55 and wasn't sure how good a job I did so I took to my dealer and compared it to one they had. Mines cut better then the one they had and the salesman who is aro can maker and their Festool expert told me that mine cut better then his, so I left a happy man

Ya know I think I'm going to adj my TS 75 .....

My CCS works like a charm.  My hands are a bit shaky and the screw keeps jumping away. Matbe if the chuck wobbled, it wood be easier for me.

The little magnet that holds bits into the drill fell out.  A dab of crazy glue seemed to solve the problem for about 10 minutes of use before falling out again.  It got lost on the shop floor, so i just use the chucks, which ever is most appropriate.  The batteries are dead for my ancient CD 12, but the chucks fit my CDX.  I just put a bit into each chuck and change chucks as needed.

I am thinking of getting another CDX.  If the new one has a wobble, I will just need to coordinate the wobble with my shakes.  Very simple. ::)
