Router based inlay and marquetry has been a fascination for me over a long period of time.  I have wanted to incorporate these techniques into some of the smalls (Jewelry boxes, humidors, light furniture, as well as others) that I make.

I ordered books; watched countless videos; and did a lot of other research to determine what the best methods and tools I would need to use in order to meet my goals....and as of yesterday, I have taken delivery of what I believe is the best solution.

Thank you Paul Marcel (HalfInchShy) for some of your videos that helped. Also The WoodWhisperer for his router based inlay video which was one of the best for the basics of inlay.

Where I differed from The WW is his use of the OF1400. I don't feel it is the proper tool for such delicate and precise work. Visualizing the cut and the weight of the router seemed to be more of a problem than it was worth. (See the videos below)

So my research ended in the purchase of the USA made Foredom 5400 flexshaft woodcarving motor; the newest inlay router base from William Ng Woodworking school, along with their inlay router bit set; and finally a Carson Magnifying Visor with multiple lenses.

Now I just need to practice, practice, and practice before actually digging into some of my really expensive lumber.

Here's the items:

The one video that really sold me on the worth of incorporating inlay, though not the tool used:

I wish I had the time to go to William Ng's Woodworking School for his inlay class, but alas, no time!  [sad]

And here endeth my first non-Festool powered tool purchase in over a year! (Kapex though on Feb 1st!)

Cheers,

Frank

Frank.  Hey I sent you a message a few weeks ago.  Never heard back.  Did you get it, or are you a snob.  Lol

Oops... Blame it on Nigerian Internet.  PM sent just now.

Good choices - I have William's router base and a Foredom tool and it's great for inlay and other detail routing.  I actually use that router to clean out dovetail waste that I saw with a DT saw as well - Really a great compliment to my Festool routers.  I think you'll really like it!

Ever considered Paul Schurch?

Paul Schurch woodwork Paul Schurch came out and did a presentation once.
His work is More of a veneer work Marquetry thing, but I noticed you also mentioned Marquetry. Going that route will most likely require investing in a scroll saw, and a vacuum press amongst other things, but it is a way.

I am hopeful that I will be able to attend a intro to veneer work class by a local Luster/ veneer expert. Hopefully Marquetry is down the road.

Frank,

Did you look into DVD's and training by Marc Adams?  You might want to see what he has to offer along those lines.....
