I am about twenty miles north of Detroit, but my heart is in the UP. If the geography of the UP was in the LP it would be overrun with development. When the Mackinaw Bridge was opened there was a group of UP folks who held a mock protest, led by a former State Supreme Court judge, John Voleker who was also the auther of Anatomy of a Murder. His pen name was Robert Traver and the movie from the book starred Jimmy Stewart, Lee Remick, and Ben Gazarra. There is a great little county park in Grand Marais, Michigan where they filmed the end of the movie and it was home to a sea kayaking rendezvous I used to attend every year. Voelker, somewhat tongue-in-cheek lamented the bridge was going to ruin the UP, and especially his trout fishing.
Michigan State is a long way from home! No matter, we bleed maize and blue blood (UofM) in our household.
