Deck

I built a deck of some Asian hardwood with the same groove configuration and the grooves go on the bottom side to help stabilize the wood during the year long season movement.

I finished all sides of the decking boards before installing them and now all I have to do is finish with a top coat twice a year here in California.

There is no frost line where I live and pre-formed deck piers on compacted ground works fine as long as tree roots don't get under them.

Okay, okay a jokes a joke but who the smeg planted that piggin' M***ta in your pics?  [mad]

;D ;D ;D

Good days work there by the way  [big grin]

Re: Ground frost- it is very rare to get ground frost permeating more than 28" in the UK, that would be in the far north I'd have thought. Further south the cold spells don't last long enough to permeate very far. Ground heave is considered when planning foundations for properties but not generally for decks or " permanent structures" that require planning permission.

Rob.

Thanks Rob. I don't understand your joke tho  ???

I'll second your opinion on Panasonic drills..........

They are great

Looks good. And have enjoyed the responses.

Some contrast to Australian experience. At least where I live we use stumps on below ground concrete footings  due to excessive ground movement and cracking between hot and dry summers and wet winters. Treated pine bearers  and joists due to moisture (and termites) and plastic damp course is often layed between joist and deck.

As to grooves up or down; officially down to allow moisture  to drain away where deck meets joist and to facilitate movement without excessive sqeaking when walked upon. However many prefer upward groves.

Most common deck timbers are Merbu (Asian Rainforrest), Australian Spotted Gum and Treated Pine. Common widths are 70mm,90mm and 140mm. The latter often cups if not screwed or nailed by three across. Hidden fixing methods are also becoming popular.

Have now edit. with photograph of a recent deck of mine under construction as illustration of above comments.

Here's today's effort.
Nice one, looks like a sweet little deck man! I bet the customers are super happy with the way things are shaping up! Looking forward to seeing where you take it from there!  [thumbs up] [popcorn]

Will it all be stained to match the existing fence and rail section colours or will it be left like that?

What are in the plans for the rafter tails on the pergola? Any thought of a stylized cut? A quick detail like that can truly be a knuckleduster when all is said and done. Here is one I did to give you an idea of what I am talking about:

One criticism if I may...... next time try to layout the screws that hold the skirt boards on. If it were my deck I would lose my mind looking at them, and probably rip them off....  just saying. [wink]

Have a good one,

Nice deck.
I is wierd for us in northern US to not see the posts go in the ground. I have to ask, why 2x6s spanning 8'(not 2x8

Here's the deck finished. The client is looking into what they want to cover the roof of the deck with. They are also going to put a gutter along the roof once the they have chosen a roof covering.

Can someone please rotate the pics for me? Why do they not come up the same way as they do on my iPhone?

It is odd!

Cus when I downloaded ur picture before to rotate it for you when I uploaded it rotated on its side again which is odd because on my Imac they are the right way!     I had to RE-save the image as jpeg and then upload it and it was okay then.

I use the reply, click additional options, then choose file and select the images from my phone from there

if you add    [ attachimg=# ]   to your posts  per image   then they will be FULL size

If you use tapatalk app it uploads the image full size automatically.

About your images being rotated the wrong way............ I dont know!   cus just with these picture I rotated for you just now  when I downloaded them onto my Imac they where the  correct way up.    I know from the last time if I just re-upload them they will rotate the wrong way.

So I just re-save them on my Imac and then upload them and they stay the correct way up.

I cant help you why they rotate the wrong way even though they show up the correct way on your device.
