Domino changes coming?

Hello all,

So I'm thinking about expanding my Festool lineup and possibly adding a Domino this Christmas.  However, I believe I read somewhere that Festool is planning on tweaking a few things about the Domino, something about making the alignment pins retractable or removable or something like that.  Can anyone confirm if that is true?  Not having any experience with a Domino yet, I was wondering how important that feature is?  What do you folks think, would you suggest waiting for this "new and improved" version, or is it better to grab one now before the price increase?

Any input appreciated.

Thanks,
Bob

If you have a use for it now then I would probably go ahead and get the current one.  I don't find the pins catching on things to be much of an issue once you have used the Domino for a couple hours.  Just need to take a little care until you are used to it.

The one improvement that I would like to see is to be able to set it for shallower mortises than 12mm, for use with thinner stock such as 1/2 inch stock.  I have made some PVC stop collars as suggested in the Domino user manual.

Best,
Todd

The price increase had me on the fence.  The change to the plastic dogs (instead of the metal guide pins) pushed me off the fence.  My Domino arrived today, with metal pins.

To be fair, I haven't tried a Domino with the plastic dogs, and their ability to be retracted is nice.

just buy one now,  they work great the change of the pins is due to a copyright deal that they had to change them because lamilio said they copied they pins and so festool had to change them to flappers.  (at least that what I heard and I think I am right.)

and the prices are going up soon so go get yourself a xmas present!

My recommendation is to just buy it now and beat the price increase, if you are interested in having a Domino machine.  The spring-loaded metal dowel pins are not a real issue in my experience.  I ordered my Domino sight unseen before the dealers had them to distribute, and have never had any problems not due to my own fault (carelessness).  Yes, the metal dowel pins can interfere with positioning the Domino machine.  But that is easily avoided by simply taking care to position the machine by bringing it straight forward into contact with the workpiece to be morticed rather than sliding it sideways which might allow one of the dowel pins to engage on an edge.
