Recently I sent my df500 in for service for a calibration problem. The turn around time was less than a week- FANTASTIC! When it was returned, there was a checklist of all the services performed. Along with the checklist, were two pieces of maple joined with the domino. All I have to say is CONGRATULATIONS FESTOOL, you successfully duplicated the problem I sent it in for without repairing it. Really can't wait to call them in the morning.

Sorry to hear about that. I'll pass this along to our service team. If you'd prefer, I can have someone reach out to you. Please keep me updated on how this progresses.

Thank you, I will keep you posted. Disheartening when a $1000.00 surgical tool doesn't perform like one. Joints that are 1/32"off consistently are unacceptable, period. I explained it needed a calibration and I get that. I will contact repair again and see what they say.

UPDATE!!! I just got off the phone with Festool service in Indiana. I was informed that the consistent 1/32" off on the edges of the workpiece is as good as they can get it. The rep basically told me that I'm cutting into wood and my expectations are unrealistic. I don't think they are. 1/32" off x32 dominoes= 1" off by the end of the workpiece, how, I ask, are my expectations unrealistic? Isn't this advertised as a precision tool?

Have you got a picture showing exactly which way it is off? Are you talking left /right ? Is this a stack up error from doing a series of cuts ?

Seth

It's 1/32" off on one domino. Two boards are the same length, put one domino in and it's 1/32" off, the ends aren't flush. Service told me that's as good as they can get it. I've had this problem from day 1 with this thing and am fed up(had it a little over a year). I sent it in for them to fix it. Like I said, they basically told me tough beans. The stacking error was an example of it being 1/32" off. Don't understand the significance of the question "Is it off to the right or left ?".

Not left or right. Left / right as opposed to the fence scale up / down. Just trying to make sure anyone offering help knows exactly what is off.

I gather that it is the lexan scale and that the mortise does not get cut exactly centered?

Seth

Have a look at this video from Paul-Marcel. It shows how to calibrate the cursor on the clear plastic viewport.

Since the OP is worried about cumulative error he must be using the pins to register the tool in the previous mortise rather than aligning the curser to a mark.

My Domino is the original version with round steel pins, one of which was adjustable so it could be set to the same offset as the other pin. I don't know much about the later plastic pins.

If it's the pins/paddles, Paul-Marcel covers that adjustment at the end of that video too.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I have tried the Marcel method, as well as the method in the supplemental manual. It appears as though there isn't enough room for the window to move over to make the adjustment, thus the trip to service. For them to say close is good enough doesn't sit well when the tool is advertised as a precision tool. If I bought it at Harbor Freight, that would be another story.

Hmmm So it wasn't supposed to joint the maple?

Personally I took off my "window" on my XL. I found I was getting parallax and psyching myself out!  Once I took off the window and used the etching on the fence... I had a lot more accurate plunges.

Good luck!

Cheers. Bryan.

UPDATE! After sending the domino back a second time, Festool did, indeed, find a problem with the tool. They resolved it and returned the domino, I checked it and it works to my satisfaction.

A hassle for sure, but good to know they fixed your machine to your satisfaction.  [smile]

Good to hear.  Thanks for letting everyone know it all worked out in the end.  Several on FOG have large investments in these tools and I for one am always glad when Festal helps justify the cost with terrific service and the great warranty.
