Domino Joiner DF500 handle

Finally I found time to add a handle to the DF500, using one of the plane handles lying around, which were bought at the local Lee Valley store  (Clearance Corner) a few years back. I know other people have tried that and liked it.

For the usual projects (say, only double digits of mortises to mill), I won't need the handle, but for a big joinery task, I think the handle will come handy. For now, it sits detached in the systainer.

For me, that would result in torquing the Domino down and screwing up the mortise or trapping the cutter.

Yes, that could happen if the hand holding the handle or barrel (normal use) is pushing down as well when pushing forward.

When I use the DF500, my focus/downward pressure is always on the hand at the front, and the hand at the back is a loose grip on the barrel with the force directed straightforward. I never look at the barrel or the dominant hand when using the joiner. A loose grip also makes the milling process less tiring on the hand when I have a lot to mortise/push. I also find that if I place my arm closer to my body, I have absolute control of the machine in terms of pushing angle and speed.

I gave the handle a few dry runs; the pushing felt easier. The key here is a loose grip on the handle, resting the hand (little finger to the wrist) comfortably on the base of the handle and the barrel as I push. It's like using a rabbet plane or plow plane with a gentle grip on the handle when pushing to avoid tilting the plane -- a common mistake when people charge their planes forward with a tight grip.

I’m intrigued by your little domino sample guide. Can you tell us more about that. It seems like a great idea.

I came across the block on Pinterest, and made one to hold the small wrench as well.
