Good day everyone...well after thousands of mortises my Domino XL went down...started smelling “burnt plastic” and the Domino would shut off during use.  Was getting a little warmer than usual as well.  Shipped it off to FESTOOL on Tuesday.  While looking for receipt found out I have two weeks warranty left!

Using it the proper way....not hating on FESTOOL. As much as I use I would buy another in a heartbeat if needed...only use it for 14mm x 140 dominos...

I love your doors!

Peter

Given the number of terrific looking doors you have created and shared with us I would guess your Domino has been used for many more 14 x 140 tenons than most.  Hope you get in back soon, glad the repair cost is covered and looking forward to viewing more of your work.

Thanks for the kind words gents...just wondering if anyone else experienced the same issue...hope I get the “good” FESTOOL customer service for this issue and the matter gets resolved quickly.

When I asked how you were using the 700, I was not implying you were misusing the tool only curious. I have both Dominos and want to be sure to know the symptoms of your failure mode.

[member=28223]SoonerFan[/member] Perhaps this make more sense 14mm(thick) X 140mm(long)  [big grin] they are 28mm wide. So yeah going by the number of doors you made, I'd say you easily have a thousand dominos bored  [tongue]

Is it possible you smelled cooked electrical bits and not plastic?  Hopefully it’s a simple fix, but knowing Festool, they will go over the whole thing, which is great for you.  Just be use to test it to make sure your mortises are perfectly aligned before you put it back to work on those beautiful doors.

Shipped out last Tuesday, out for delivery today.  Fast turnaround time.  I’ll post what the issue was when I get it later today...

Here are the items that were replaced to fix the issue...can’t express how happy I am with an 8 day turnaround which includes shipping both ways!

Armature!

The word that filled us Kapex owners with dread. [scared] [tongue] [tongue] [tongue]

Looking at that list, it’s posible that the bearing was the root of the problem and caused excessive load on the motor which then gave out and took the electronics with it.

But this is pure speculation.  Was it starting to sound different in the days before it died?

Glad to see it back in loving hands.

Festool does indeed go over everything and replace wear parts if they feel the need - even if they are not the cause of the issue.

One ting I like about festool service is when you send it in they go through the entire tool and when its returned to you its basically a new tool.

Oh Im moving to Az so my trip to Tx is delayed

Hey Hiram,

Checked out your website....nice work indeed. We have a customer who also has an XL700 and which failed in a similar way. I sent his off to Festool and it was under warranty like yours so he got back an essentially new tool....all cleaned up and probably more parts than needed to be, replaced. I talked to him last Saturday and he's back to massive domino drilling and happy as a clam. Whatever your approach to Festool, I know of no other tool company operating in the U.S. in the same arena that provide such good and timely service.
