Recently in another thread, I mentioned the mind game that finish work can be. I walked myself right into a mind fork yesterday. I will preface by saying that I haven't slept in about 25 days, but I am working on 6 mahogany doors in the shop. Finish sanding and then brushing coats of Epifanes on all surfaces.
Our field crew is very busy, which means all the most popular prep tools are in the field working hard. So, I'm looking around the shop for some combo to set up to do my prep and in between coat sanding on these doors.
I find the CT36AC with the black hose, blast gate and cradle on top. A RTS400 with a dog eared base. And a 22 mm (yes, really) hose. Oh, and like one piece of 120 and piece of 180 granat for the RTS.
I hook up this odd mix of stuff. You all know how I love the RTS. And you probably know how I feel about mahogany.
I fire up the RTS, actually curious as heck to see how the 22mm will do on it, and having never done finish sanding using the AC for extraction.
It was a very odd experience. Followed by a very odd but methodical round of trouble shooting, which included breaking down the 36AC (about 30% full of straight up drywall dust), pulling the filter, cleaning everything, and reassembling.
Long story short, and it only took me about a half hour to come to this conclusion, the blast gate on the extractor had been closed the entire time.
Once that was solved, I can now report that a RTS/36AC and a 22 mm hose is quite a setup. The rest of the day was great.
Moral of the story: Dont get duped by the blast gate.
