Dust Collection

I'm going to update my 25+ year old dust collection system. I'm thinking of using schedule 20 PVC pipe and fittings and I have a question is a grounding wire on the inside of the pipe adequate or do I have to put one on the outside of the pipe as well.

I have mine on the outside, I used a screw at every joint so it protrudes just inside the pipe, then used connectors for the wire.  I made sure to use metal blast gates at the end of my runs as well.
Have the wire starting at the base of the DC base and to the end of every run.
I have no static build up in the pipe whatsoever. Been running it for almost 3 years with no problems.
