Dust Deputy and other dust pre processors

I've always wondered why so many people insist on buying the full dust deputy package for a premium when standalone cyclones are available at a fraction of the cost and you can make your own receptacle in probably less time than it takes to read the feedback on this kit online and place an order.

I don't think anyone is insisting on it, however, the full package has advantages over home made one:
a) Current model is antistatic (conductive) all the way through. Static can damage you Festool vac, and that happened to some users using cyclones.
b) It mounts on top of Fastool vac.
c) It allows to use plastic liner bag for easy cleanup. If you want that for your own setup, you need to do something to equalize pressure on both sides of the liner to prevent sucking it in.

Just saying, it's a lot of money for a plastic bucket. I can see the "steal" in that but probably not the way some people do BTW one can make a container that mounts on a Festool vac pretty easily...

Some people find extra value in an elegant solution.  If I used a CT I would have a UDD but for me the Oneida Dust Cobra made a better in shop (whole shop) solution.

Make your own clothes and shoes? Harvest the wool or leather from the animals above for the raw materials ?
Build your own house ? Cut your own lumber from trees you planted ?

Many people would just rather sub out tasks they could easily do themselves for a variety of reasons.

The opposite is also true. I know a few wealthy people that would rather take care of a couple of chickens themselves and harvest their eggs when they could easily just pay to have whatever eggs they wanted flown in everyday or afford to hire a live in chicken whisperer to mind their birds.

Everyone has different motivations. Some value money for than time, others the opposite. Some appreciate other people's designs more than anything they could dream up themselves. Others are looking for a sense of accomplishment, while some are just looking for a tool to get a job done.

The market usually responds to varying needs and wants.

I just got my ultimate dust deputy and CT26.  Looks like it will work, but dang it is tall.  Won't fit beneath the bench.  Has anyone tried mounting the Dust Deputy beside the dust extractor, maybe with its own wheels??

I don't know why that wouldn't work... you're right, it IS pretty tall and unwieldy. I have mine on a CT36 and it's TALL. Just moving it from building to building in my home workshop is a pain. BUT, when I needed to sand some drywall and was concerned about the dust clogging the filters and bag, and maybe damaging the motor... the Ultimate Dust Deputy handled it all. NOTHING got to the filter or bag as far as I can tell.
I am thinking of getting the Planex Easy next year for a project, and the UDD would handle it well I think - no need to get the CT36AC.

LDBecker I don't think you need the CT36ac at all if you have the UDD.  I have the CT36ac but because the UDD works so well, when sanding drywall I don't swap out the hepa filter and replace the filtered bag with the open top plastic bag anymore.  For UDD replacement bags I use regular 15 gallon trash bags but I get the stretchy ones so you can stretch out the top to fit over the top of the UDD.

If you use a cyclone you still should change your bag in the CT once every year or when it becomes discoloured.

People should be aware that they may be voiding their vacuum warranty by using a DD with it.

If you want to take your CT, without the DD, to a job site then go for it and reconnect it when you get back. If you change your bag once a year then that allows for quite a few trips away.

I think Peter's rule of thumb above is a little bit too blunt, although if you're very discerning about judging whether the bag is "discoloured" it will work.

Just keep in mind that very fine dust does get past the DD and it clings to the inner surface of the bag clogging the pores so the bag can seem to be empty yet still be compromised. Put your palm over the end of the hose and check the suction if suspicious. If suction does feel reduced but the bag still appears to be empty, sometimes all it takes is the thump the surface of the bag all around to knock enough fines out that you can continue working.

Yep. I purchased mine when I was using a 7" diamond grinding cup wheel on a big angle grinder attached to the dust collector with the 50mm hose. This is about the worst case scenario because this tool makes a massive amount of dust. The UDD made a positive difference in how long I could work before the bag would clog and reduce air flow, but it would still eventually clog. The dust that got to the bag was extremely fine and only way to clear it was to lift the top off the dust collector and move the bag.

Unless I'm going to do a trivial amount of work, I always bring the UDD with me even for wood dust collection. I'm pleased with how it performs and I like how it raises the hose connection. Plus, if I accidentally suck up something, it is easy to retrieve by taking off the cyclone top. This creates very little dust compared to digging into the filter bag. ;-)
