You've asked for it and we've created it --- the doors and drawers class. I realize that many of you had requested that it be the same week as a cabinet class and that's not the case this time but we'll try to do that in the future. Also, sorry for the short notice.

Sign up now!

Course Description:
As the next step in the development of Festool end-user focused classes, we are calling for entries for a 2-day class focused on the construction of various styles and types of cabinet doors and drawers, utilizing the Festool System.    The class will take place at our headquarters in Lebanon, IN, and will be primarily geared towards professional applications.

In this class, the tools and techniques necessary to build and install shop-quality doors will be covered, with emphasis on Shaker flat panel, slab w/ applied molding, faux raised panel, and cope and stick with raised panel.  Door styles to include inset, overlay and half-overlay.

Drawer box applications will focus on both inset and overlay styles, using blind and through-tenon construction.  Dovetail drawer construction will be discussed, but not covered.

Though participants will walk away with a range of broadly applicable skills, the class will be primarily focused on pro-oriented techniques and applications.  From raw material to finished boxes ready for finish, you will learn how to work faster, easier, and smarter with the Festool System.

Since most of the two days will be spent in the shop, actually using the tools, we request that registrants have some previous knowledge of the Festool System, and/or the basics of trim carpentry or cabinet construction.  Safety is an extremely high priority in this setting, and we have billed this as an intermediate to expert level class since this class will be almost all hands-on.

Safety glasses and earplugs will be required during all tool use.  In addition, participants will be asked to sign a standard liability waiver at the outset of class.  If this presents a problem, please let us know beforehand, since this will impact our ability to allow you to work with the tools.

We will notify selected participants (as well as a handful of alternates) by email. The one thing we ask of our selected participants is that you arrive on time and stick around for the full two days.

Travel and Accommodations:
Participants are responsible for all travel and accommodations.  We will be glad to help you make hotel reservations at our preferred local establishment (Fairfield Inn on 86th Street in Indianapolis).  And for those participants staying at the Fairfield Inn, Festool will arrive for pick-up on both days at 7:30am.

Festool will provide basic refreshments (bagels and coffee) in the morning at our HQ, and lunch will be provided both days.

Since some of the best conversations happen outside of the classroom, we will plan either a cookout or a group dinner on the first night following class.

Well, I think this may be the fastest we've had a class fill up. Look forward to meeting those of you who signed up in a couple of weeks!

Hi Shane.

That was fast!
Can you put me on a cancellation/wait list.
Are you going to schedule another class

Thanks
Dave White

Yes, I should have mentioned that this class will become part of our standard offerings in the future. So, expect to see it in our schedule for future classes. The next group of classes will be for the second quarter of the year. I would expect to have those dates some time in mid-February.

wow, I had just checked in. That was fast!
Glad to know it's going to be up and coming.
I was looking forward to this one.

Shane,

That is very exciting that the Door & Drawer class not only has a firm date for the first session, but that it filled so quickly.

I know that everyone who attends will lear a whole lot from Brian.

Because I am already set to participate in the Solid Surface class in Henderson in February, in January I need to actually build a whole lot of cabinets in my shop. Therefore I wanted other FOG members to have the chance to participate in D&D.

I hope everyone in the entire Festool extended family had a marvelous safe and sane holiday season. Yes, I certainly do expect to visit Indianapolis in 2011.

Shane I am shocked that the class filled up so soon just logged on and missed the cut.
Please put me on the cancellation / standby list I can attend any location at any time. Would you consider filming and posting the more pertinent parts of the training ? I'm sure I speak for everyone that missed the selection

Filled up before I saw it too, based on the number of comments on this, I'd guess the next one will be full in a few hours too :-(

Just a heads up... There will be another doors & drawers class posted (probably later today) for Indy on Feb 7-8. I think we already have 4 people who asked to be put on a list of alternates for the original class and they will be given priority.

Shane,

When do notices go out if you have been selected for the first class?  I signed up, but if I don't make the cut, I will keep and eye out for this one as well.

Jeff, you should have just received something from Minnie. If you complete the survey successfully, you're in. It usually takes a couple of days for us to get everything together to send to participants.

Since it is now after 8pm in Lebanon, the very first Doors & Drawers class is either still have their first night group dinner, or are back at the hotel.

Having been trained by Brian S, I am sure everyone in this D&D class has learned much useful information.

Good fortune to you all!

I didn't take any pictures - so maybe it didn't happen?

The class was great, being taught by both Brian and Steve, plus Minnie joined us for dinner on Monday night.  The class description in the opening thread pretty well covered the material we went through.  All the tools mentioned were used, plus a couple of CMS were set up for routing the cope and stick and raised panel.  The RO90 was also available and great for sanding the frames.

At the end we were asked to describe any "ah ha" moments.  The best response was that they were sprinkled throughout.  I don't have the MFS system and appreciated its flexibility.  I have a couple of MFT tables and still learned a couple of new tricks that I somehow missed previously.  Specifically don't be too quick to reset the square, if the table isn't square, it is most likely something is lose and just check all the knobs, etc.  The LR 32 is slowly becoming more natural.  I think I'm finally beginning to think in metric and need to remember to keep using it (I was able to bring home a metric rule).

Nothing captures the hospitality of the Festool staff as they went out of their way to make the visit enjoyable.  It was great partnering with Les from whom I picked up quite a number of tips.

While attending the Doors and Drawers class, I took the opportunity to bring in my Rotex 150 as it was starting to sound different with a bit of a grinding noise (my wife asked how I could tell as she thought it was so noisy to begin with, but that's what ear plugs are for).  They replaced a bearing, cleaned it up and even replaced the pad with a new multi-jet stream pad.  A fellow class member decided that it was so I'd have to replace all my sand paper.  Great serice -  thanks Lester and the rest.
