i bought this machine a while back now. it was brand new but had been listed at less than half price by a uk based tool supplier. nothing in the listing to say anything otherwise so i went for it. when i try to adjust the speed control it doesnt seem to have any affect on it. it seems to remain at a constant speed although it seems occasionally in use to slow down and then speed up again. have i got a faulty machine? itll still be within its warranty so i can send it for repair but just wondering what others with these machines have found?

When you use the speed control you will definitely notice the change in speed, most noticeably in the sound it makes, lower RPM means a lot less sound. There's no mistaking about it. If your sander's speed does not change, you should absolutely have it fixed. I mean - just so you know your sander is fully functional. I myself never dial the sanders down.

Just to clarify, you're talking about the older model ETS 150/3, and not the newer ETS-EC 150/3?
In either case what you're describing is not normal, and should warrant a service call. But the underlying problem might be different depending upon the model. The newer EC's have electronic speed control, which modulates the speed depending upon surface contact and a variety of other factors, and which every so often can behave weirdly, like slowing down for no apparent reason. For the older ETS, the speed is fully manually and mechanically controlled, and so the fix may be as simple as making sure the speed dial is actually interlocking with the speed control mechanism.

it’s a Festool. If you got it for half price you get one speed... sounds like it’s inop, you should noticeably see and hear a difference. Turn it around and look at the disc. You can draw a large dot on a sheet of sandpaper as a reference mark. Adjust the setting up and down and like the quote above you should hear and see a difference. Take a video and send it to Festool after you talk their technical support. Sounds defective... is this something new or just happening. Just to be clear, if you are sanding and apply downward force the machine will slow down, when you lift up it speeds up. Best to flip it over and adjust the speed setting to see if the dot spins faster. Use a red or black marker large enough to see like a pencilear3 said:
