Hi FOG!

Well, just when I need it to perform to it's full potential, the ETS 150 is giving me issues. The sander is getting super hot, it doesn't take long to get hot either. At the same time, the sanding pad has separated (foam from the plastic part). I'm thinking this is somehow related, but would like some input.

thanks,

You'll soon get comments from more experienced foggers.

Have you taken the pad off and checked that no bits in airways through which extracted dust is taken:
How does it run without pad - heat wise?

Richard.

Thanks for the input. I pulled the pad off, there was some build up in the vents, but none were fully clogged. I ran it for a couple minutes and it seemed OK. I am going to pick up a new pad later, and hopefully it will work. I just really wonder if the heat caused the pad to separate. The pad was relatively new prior to this incident.

When the sander gets hot, do you mean the body where the motor is? If so, this is very serious and you won't be able to fix it yourself, get the Festool service department involved.

As for the pad seperating, that's unrelated. Happened to some other folks here and I understand they got a new pad when they contacted Festool.

So I got one advice for you: get in contact!

I don't know what you are sanding, what brand abrasive, what grit, whether you are using a dust extractor, if you are using an extension cord, what gauge, length or if it is being shared with another device/devices.

Here is a suggestion.  Take a dry, soft sponge (or a piece of soft foam) about the size of your hand and 1" or so thick.    Place it on top of your ETS 150 and then put your hand on top of the sponge. Turn on the sander and sand without fully compressing the sponge.

If your sander still gets hot and you still go through pads it is not your fault.

Or, you could forget about the sponge and try to lighten your touch.  Let the paper do the work.

Thanks for the input - I have contacted Festool directly. I was sanding with 150 (rubin 2). The sander was connected to my Mini vac. No extension cord. I feel that my pressure is 'right', but tomorrow I'll double check. Again, thanks for the input.

I was surprised to learn that festool paper is European graded, I didn't even know it existed (more American exceptionalism).

What i've learned, for me, is that i can often use a lower grit and with a light touch remove more material, work faster and have no visible scratches (doing wood floors). Keeping the sander clean is huge and the dust shroud in good shape is also important. I find great pleasure in fussing with my expensive tools, and they return the favor by working very well in general. Exceptions do occur. ;)

I used my brand new 150 yesterday together with the ctl26 dust extractor. I also recognized that it gets hot but not superhot. If I leave it off for 30 minutes it is still warm but I guess that is due to the massive construction. I sand with grit 150 and I used the speed setting=1 (lowest).
