Euro pricing vs. US Pricing

I'm pretty sure it would be illegal for Festool to try to restrict dealers from shipping anywhere within EU, as long as the dealer is operating within the EU. It's one of the basic principles of the EU...

This horizontal price fixing that's going on is also illegal in the EU, but apparently it's not stopping anybody .......

Well just to illustrate, the MFT/3 pricing:

€716,32 ($936.56) over here in Belgium
€704,48 ($921.08) in the Netherlands
€684,25 ($894.63) in Germany
€708,03 ($925.72) in France

They are all neighbouring countries of Germany btw :P
And then there's even worse like Australia, Norway, ...
You guys in the states don't know how lucky you are, even if some things are NAINA.

Folks,

You should compare apples to apples.
1. European prices does include VAT. (20% average). That means $200 per $1000. US prices does not include VAT. We pay state taxes in addition to base price (average 8%). If you compare prices without VAT, the difference won't be significant.
2. Social programs are very expensive. Paid vacations (if you are permanent employee) in the USA  are 10-15 days. Maternity leave is 6 weeks only. You can compare to the same things in Europe. Employer (read dealer) has to pay for that.

I prefer  discuss wood dust, not politics :)

I've got a feeling that New Zealand is probably the most expensive country to buy Festools in.

For example:

OF2200 in Canada - $950+taxes
OF2200 in NZ - $1838.35 Taxes included

TS55 Plunge Saw in Canada - $640+taxes
TS55 Plunge saw in NZ - $1259.25 taxes included

Domino in Canada - $950+taxes
Domino in NZ - $1723.85 taxes included.

So as much as i complain about the higher prices up here in Canada compared to the USA. I'm glad i don't have to pay NZ prices. They do get the entire Festool range in NZ,
but i'd rather have the cheaper prices

Oh and thats just the start of it in NZ. They're paying about $2.20 a litre for Gas too (thats about $8.50 a gallon). Im glad i moved to Canada!

Yep had to pay double for tools in NZ Compared to Canada. Price of beer sucks thou. Box of 24 Waikato at the supermarket used to be about $18 in NZ, 6pack here about $14
Nothing like another Kiwi Canucks fan here in BC.

Definitely not cheap from what you post, but I've heard stories from members from South Africa, Taiwan and Japan who said they sometimes had to pay up to 4 or 5 times the American prices.

There appears to be significant errors in the presented conversion rate. Were those all calculate on the same day?

I actually live in Canada but purchase most of my festool stuff in the USA. Most tools don't have any duties, you just pay the regular taxes you would pay in canada anyways. But I drive the the US anyways...

Let us all hope nobody viewing this site works for Canadian version of ICE and/or IRS.

They were done using this site http://www.oanda.com/currency/converter/
Seemed legit

I did not question if the site was legit. There are obvious miscalculations, unless there are different exchange rates used. At any given moment the Euro to Dollar rate is the same. By the way, do you mean USA$, AUS$ or CAN$?

Nothing wrong with the conversion rate.  All of those figures work out to the same rate of $1.3074 USD.  So, there are NO significant (or insignificant) errors.

Peter here - not moderator Peter - just normal, like you Peter.  Price comparisons from various parts of the world are great to talk about but meaningless in my opinion.  Yes it is great to discuss and vent, but at the end of the day... Let's take a scenario like a manufacturer selling in the smallest country and then selling in the US, or China.  Would you discount for the increased potential volume?  Heck yes you would.

Is that fair?  Depends on which side of the equation you are on.  But business is business and not about fair.  It is about what is what is best for the company and the investors in that company.

Me.

I find all of this price talk interesting simply because the cost of "quality hardwood" is rising faster than any tooling costs that I have seen over the past 40 years.  I don't mind spending a lot of money on the best tooling if I actually have more than my lumber stash to use it on.  Engineering evolution comes in a few years at a time but, the last time I laid my eyes on wood from a 400 year old Dalbergia nigra tree was when I was a young lad. [big grin]  Interesting questions about pricing in different countries but, I think supply and demand kinda dominate the sticker price.

ok. I think the second place on this podium for Russia! [smile]
of 2200 - 1816 dollars.
Domino XL-1707 dollars.
Festool-must remain a dream! [big grin]
In the meantime we will work another tool ..

The US is the largest monolithic market in the world in terms of consumer spending. One language, culture, set of regulations etc. Overheads are distributed over an awful lot of users who have good incomes. Inevitably costs per unit are lower.
