Wurth have a multi detector (or what do you call that, it checks the wall for pipes and cables and such) on sale over here, the MD10. It isn't a direct match to the cheaper Bosch models but it could be the same deal in a slightly different shell. Does anyone have this model by any chance and could tell me if it is any good???

Link here to a eastern European Wurth page, best I could find:

I've been wanting to buy a multi detector for a while now and the price is tempting at a 100 Swiss francs but if it turns out to be crap or inconsistent I'd rather save some money and go for the real deal such as the higher end Bosch models. Those are way more expensive but I've heard they do work and having tried them in a shop ones I was rather impressed. What I want to avoid in any case is buying something now that gives me a false sense of security making me hit something none the less. Up until now I've always used common sense before drilling into a wall but wouldn't mind some extra measures.

Thanks! Bob.

My experience with such devices is that they're largely a "best guess".  None that I have ever used were truly accurate.  Someone here on the FOG mentioned using a Fein Multimaster to GENTLY cut an observation hole to search for PEX or PVC plumbing or low voltage cabling before driving nails or screws.  Years ago an alarm installer drove a screw into an enclosed ABS drain line from the second floor just before we were to go to settlement on the house that we'd just built.  He was using such a stud finder and it just didn't show the presence of anything other than a cavity.

Right, that's totally in line with my feelings. Although the more expensive Bosch I've tested ones was impressive, but who knows if it functions all the time. Anyway, I'm letting this cheaper things pass.

Thanks!

I have the Bosch DMF10 which looks to be identical to this one. It's okay for finding metal studs behind drywall but for anything else it's pretty hard to rely on - the output seems very random. It's packed away now and instead I use magnets, knocking, inspection holes and common sense + luck.  [smile]

Thanks Kristian, that is exactly what I was expecting with this Wurth thing, it sure looks like the Bosch. A hundred bucks is easily spent but if it doesn't provide any real extras on making educated guesses I'd rather save up for the real deal. I've been checking the Bosch D tect 150 and that seems to provide actual accurate data that one can really on. Totally different technology (radar) and therefor a lot more expensive but at least it works. I've put that on my list, if it saves me from hitting one pipe, cable or what not it will be money well spend.

Thanks, Bob.
