I know this is a subject of mixed reviews and ideas, but I need some help in deciding what way to go.

Just completely stripped an old, old, door.  cut "new" old wavy bubble glass for the five lights.

Now what?  I am a bit puzzled and confused as what to do next?

What finish do I want to use?  Are all finishes availiable now for exterior doors looking at a recoat a 2 years or so?

Need to get this old door hung so I can finish triming and siding my newly rebuilt kitchen.

Are you staining the door as part of the finishing?

I have always used a high quality spar varnish with UV blockers.  I like Behlens.

If the door is open to the weather, not covered by a porch or overhang, and if it takes direct sunlight very much it will be a yearly or every other year job to maintain and recoat the spar varnish.  If it is covered and north facing you might get 5 or 6 years before recoating.

I would put a minimum of 3 or 4 coats on initially and then scuff and recoat with one coat yearly or every other year.

Yes, real wood doors can be a lot of maintenance work but they can also look spectactular too.

Best,
Todd
