The  four sided  carbide inserts  for  the silent power  planer  are £10  each  on felders E shop.
That's  seems  eye wateringly expensive.

Does  anyone know  how many are  fitted to the  315mm  planer  head?

I think you should check with Felder. In the USA, 10 carbide inserts cost $55.00 plus tax.  That's a far cry from £10 each!

As for the number of inserts on the whole head... Not sure. I have yet to have to even turn an insert to a fresh side on my A3-41.

OOps my mistake.
There  about £5  each  in the UK.

Yes I'll contact them  and  see how many  are needed.
Thank you.

The spec on the silentpower knives is 13.8 x 13.8 x 2.5 with 4 cutting edges that have a polished radius. The corners are also marked from 1 to 4 to make it easy to keep track of rotation.

68 cutters on the 16" head.

Im about to take the plunge on a Felder AD741.

The math on seven boxes comes out to $385. Pretty sure no sales tax on purchases from Delaware as there is no sales tax on the purchase of the machine. Not sure how that works across the pond.

Thats $96.24 a side. From those i have talked to that own a machine with the silent cuter head i am told none have turned even one in two years time since the purchase of the machines.

Seems like a no brainer to me!

Yes it seems like a good option.

Noise  levels  reduced, less power consumed  and  denser  shavings.

The Silent Power  head is only available  on new machines.

Not retro fittable.  :(

Or at least  that's what I was  told when I contacted  Felder  UK today.

This means  that  if I purchase a  new  A3 31  planer/thicknesser  with the standard  cutter block  and a few months  down the line  I realise I made a mistake  and  should  have had the  Silent  Power  head fitted  then  I have to change the entire machine.

The only  reason I can think off is that  the  Silent  Power  head  is a different diameter  or design  and the actual  welded fabrication and bearing  sizes  of the machine  is modified  to suit. Which of course  could only be done  in the Felder  factory.

They offered to sell me a brand new  C3 31  Perform  with  Silent  Power  and Dado facility  for  just slightly  under  £10,000. [eek]
I paid  £3500  for  my  6 year  old  C3  31 Perform  which is in mint  condition.  [smile]

Unfortunately in your case the only option is the Byrd cutter head if you really want to go to something other than straight knives.
