I'm looking at a Carvex and interested in opinions on which handle style is preferred and why. Thank you in advance.

It's more about you being comfortable. The barrel grip is better for working upside down and allows you to "grip down" on the tool, but it does not have the variable speed trigger that the D-handle has. I've always used D-handled jigsaws, so when I got my Trion, I decided to give the barrel grip a go. I like it for what I use it for - cutting out parts from 8/4 hardwood.

It's personal preference. A LONG time ago, my first jigsaw was a D-handle. When I bought the Trion (actually my first Festool product) I opted for the barrel grip. I find that more comfortable for me, but it's certainly subjective.

I still keep my Ryobi D handle for trash cuts. But my carvex is barrel and the lower CG is much better when trying to control, even while cutting on top. Barrel however is not ergonomic if you're doing fast and furious.

Much easier to accurate complex patterns with the barrel grip. I used mine today to cut two acrylic diameters for side tables. My first barrel grip, changing from a top grip is an old Bosch 1570 that I wood, metal, glass and tile with. People complain about the Carvex but I wrack this up to rushing and operator error, I've used mine and never had an issue, learn how to use it properly

Barrel grip for me. BUT if you have small hands or short fingers then it might be worthwhile to look at the D handle. The trigger for on/off is mounted far up on the grip of the barrel and I know that I certainly had the tendency to try and use my thumb to operate and that is just enough of a stretch that it can cause you to move the saw when trying to operate. The cure for that is to use your pointer finger, but my thumb still tries to get in the action. Try to get your hands on both before you purchase.

I learned on a D-handle so I've always used that style jigsaw...until the P1cc. Now it's either a D-handle Trion or a barrel grip Mafell. I feel like I have more precise control with the barrel grip but it's not as comfortable as using the D-handle especially for long sessions. Also, the barrel grip will heat up a bit because you're actually gripping the motor.

I had a D-handle carvex at first and then found it too bulky, so sold it and got the barrel grip and so thankful I did.

I'm yet another that came from D-handle, having used a Bosch for decades. However, when I got my Carvex in 2019, I went with the barrel grip version. I like it much more than the D-handle, though it did take a while to get used to the dust collection. Most of the other brands use a blower to move the chips out of the way. This is obviously not going to work with a machine that draws them in. The drawback comes when using most of the accessory bases. They are not compatible with the vacuum connection.....but you don't get the blower either.

As many have written:

Quick & dirty cuts => D-handle is superior.
Seeking precision, working with rail, etc. => barrel grip it is.

If having only a single serious jigsaw, then the barrel grip cordless Mafell it is. A Trion supported by a cordless D-grip Ryobi or other cheap one trailing close behind.

Having multiple, I would go with a barrel grip corded Trion or Maffel for shop use "supported" by a cordless D-grip Makita/Dewalt/whatever.
