Festool DSC-AG 125 Grinder 767 996

Since the DSC isn't available in the U.S., I think it's ok for me to post this option that just came out this month. Looks like the dust extraction is effective and it has an optional guide rail adapter. Works on Festool, Makita or Triton rails.

I can't give any firsthand comments on it since we don't have a demo unit in stock yet to try out. Inventory is inbound any day now, we already have the guide rail adapter in stock.

Makita 4100KB 5" Dry Masonry Saw

Does that Makita saw bevel?  The description makes it sound like it does - "...1-9/16 at 90 degrees" but looking at the photos of the saw it looks like it may not tilt?

[member=13462]live4ever[/member], great question. Based on the design of the saw and looking through its manual, it does not appear to have beveling capabilities.

Apologies for the delay, I've been scrambling to complete a project downtown in time for the Super Bowl.

I bought the shroud separately, and bought a geared-down, variable speed 5" grinder (I forgot the model #, if you'd like I can dig to find out). Metabo is known for their grinders, and the reputation is deserved.

Thanks [member=2726]Tom Gensmer[/member] for getting back...

[smile]  It seems like both towns have been scrambling on completing Super Bowl projects for the last 2-3 years.  [smile]

I like this Metabo approach a lot . I started this quest looking at Flex, Rubi, Festool and MK, then I moved to the Makita 4101 series, but that doesn't run on a track. I then kind of settled on the Metabo W 12-125 HD Set CED Plus, however it was not variable speed.

So long story short, I think I'll purchase the Metabo grinding shroud and add a variable speed Metabo grinder. I'm looking at the WEV 1500-125 RT or the WEV 15-125 Quick.

Your thoughts...

Edit: Have you cut porcelain tile with this combination?

Hi [member=44099]Cheese[/member]!

At the time I got set up in the Metabo gear I opted for the WEV-15-125-HT. I chose this model because it is geared down (9600 max rpm versus the normal 11,000) and optimized for stone work. Since I intended to use the grinder for primarily cutting concrete, stucco and plaster I figured it was a good fit. I've been very happy with this model and would recommend it without hesitation. The only advice I'd give is, there's a rubber o-ring where the cutting shroud/guard meets the grinder, after several seasons and lots of abuse the o-ring failed and the guard got a little wobbly. The o-ring is an easy fix and cost just a few bucks, not bad after several years of heavy use.

I'll be VERY curious you hear your experience if you opt to go with the "rat tail" version. I like that it has a trigger and a nice, smaller diameter handle, I guess my concern was balance. Please post up your experience  [big grin]

Well I contacted Metabo and they said the WEV 1500-125 RT would not fit the CED Plus extraction hood.  [sad]

So I took a second look at the available grinder choices and came up with these. I emailed this to Metabo customer service.

"I do some metal working with stainless, however, which Metabo grinder would you recommend that would give me the best results for cutting porcelain?
WEV 15-125 HT…..2800-9600 rpm
WEV 15-125 Quick…..2800-11000 rpm
WEV 15-125 Inox…..2000-7600 rpm"

After several other back & forth emails with Metabo because they wanted to really understand my application (Yay...finally someone who's actually giving their customer the best information they possibly can. [thumbs up]), they came back with this answer.

"Cutting porcelain is best done on a wet saw with a porcelain cutting blade.
Unfortunately, Metabo has neither item.

That being said, my understanding is that it’s not impossible to cut dry.
Of the three grinders you mentioned, The WEV 15-125 HT or the WEV 15-125 Inox should work fine for you all around.
If polishing is involved to any degree, I would lean towards the WEV 15-125 Inox for its additional torque."

So [member=2726]Tom Gensmer[/member]  to wrap this little story up, I'll probably pick up the WEV 15-125 Inox grinder, I've found both of the above grinders available locally.
However, I'm curious if you purchased the CED 125 Plus extraction hood locally? I've yet to find anyone that carries it.

[member=44099]Cheese[/member], call Acme Tools in Plymouth (‭(763) 559-8665‬) and ask for Brett, he’s been very responsive about ordering specialty tools for me.

I was strongly considering the Inox version as well, I’m excited to hear what you think about it!

Thanks Tom 🙏  it was indeed Acme in Plymouth that had both of these grinders in stock. I’ll call Brett and have a chat. Thanks again...

[member=44099]Cheese[/member] have you seen this??
https://www.makitatools.com/products/details/4100KB

It is an updated version of Makita’s old stone cutting saw, now with a dust collecting shroud and an accessory adapter for using with a guide rail.

I still very much like my Metabo setup, but this may be handy for certain situations.

[member=2726]Tom Gensmer[/member],

I posted that Makita saw in the thread.  [big grin] Sorry if you missed it.

Definitely a nice option. Bummer it doesn't bevel.

Shane

Ya I did Tom, the old Makita 4101 is pretty much where I started this adventure and I believe this new Makita is an upgrade of the 4101. I ran across it recently at Toolnut thanks to Shane.

Thanks 🙏 for the heads-up. I might swing by ACME this weekend.  [smile]
