I'm just watching an episode of "ask this old house" and Tom Silva is using more Festools!  I've seen him use them before but now I see he has a Kapex too...
Also, he used the Vacuum to suck up overspray from aerosol polyurethane!  I'd never thought of that before!

Tom Silva has been using Festool for years. I think you see him using Festool more on "Ask TOH" more so then on TOH.

Yes, Tom has been using Festools for a long time.  I have noticed that since Stanley is a sponsor and they now own Porter Cable, Delta, Black & Decker and DeWalt, he has been using DeWalt products fairly frequently.  My guess is that they are being phased in and will appear more frequently.  If I was Stanley I would insist upon it.

Given the economy and the shortage of qualified sponsors, who can blame him for wanting to keep his bread buttered.

I met Tom Silva several years ago and asked him about Festool. As I recall, he said he had tried one of their sanders on a job and was so impressed with the dust collection that he was sold on their tools. He said that believe it or not he paid for his own tools and understood Festools are expensive but felt the dust collection was worth it.

This was just prior to me drinking the green Kool-Aid. I started with one and within few years had a dozen.

i say tom on TOH using a ts55 to inlay a wooden floor. just put down the rail on the old floor and cut along it through nails etc [eek]. no problem.
it was an old series (all ours are)

yep they buy all there own tools in fact I think one of the online dealers on the fog has or had tom as a customer, not positive so I wont mention the name...

but yep lots of the festools are seen on that show and are starting to show up on other shows on hgtv and diy network.. we all now why.

I miss those shows. I catch Norm on saturday mornings once in a while with the rabbit ears on the HD flat screen  [embarassed]

I know it is partly a "dealer's sales" post, and it may sound like bragging (which it kinda is), but the recollections are not correct. Springtime in 2004-2005, I along with my Manager, introduced Tom to the Festool tools. Up to that point, he had never heard, let alone handled, the Festool line of tools. Fast forward to the summer of that year, and we did another demo (rather my new  manager did - I did the intros) with Tom and some crew. It was a different time, almost a different world - Internet wise and  Festool was very unknown. I did post the pics a while ago though.
I simply thought that it would be a great idea and great for Festool to have Tom and TOH be introduced to the tools. I was certain, that once he/they had them in hands they would be wowed - and they were. I simply cold called from the White Pages and got lucky.

Great story!
I think that being able to take advantage of that luck is key.
Thanks.

Bob,

For what it's worth, that's the way I remember it.  Tom Silva said he tried someone else's Festool sander and was so impressed with the dust collection he was sold on the system.  It seems like a lot of celebrity carpenters are given tools by manufacturers but don't admit it for fear of seeming biased.  I have no problem one way or the other but he told me he buys his own tools.

Thanks,

Joe

Ken...... lol that was a good one !

they never mention tool names on the show,, but we all know by the color of the tool who's it is.  and if they got them for free or paid for them who cares?  everybody these days are so politically with everything and get all up tight as to who paid for it or not.  if they did not like them they most likely would not use them.. and they use an assortment of tools on that show.  to each his own.

however having tools show up on tv does make sales.  on tv and in movies companies used to and probably still do.. pay to be shown like showing the actor drinking a pepsi or coke... or an airline in the air.. or smoking a certain brand of cigarette...  thats business.  your either go and buy that brand or not.
