Festool on This Old House

Don't know if anyone else noticed, but this year there seems to be a lot of Festool being used on both This Old House and Ask This Old House

I know last season you could see Festool being used in some shots, but this year, it's even more prevalent.  In every episode of both shows, you can see a Festool...the dust extractor, the drill, jigsaw, plunge saw.  The best part is that Festool is NOT a sponsor, meaning these tools are being used because those are the tools the guys own and work with.  Tom Silva seems to be particularly a big fan of Festool.

I just think this speaks volume about the quality of Festool as the guys on these shows are top notch in terms of quality of work.

I know Festool is not a sponsor with an 'ad' during the show but some of the comments made and some really noticeable highlighting of the tools leads me to believe that Festool might participate in some type of product placement sponsorship.  They could probably afford the tools and might even purchase them on their own but I suspect Festool provides them.  Nothing wrong with that at all, just my observation and guess.

I cannot say whether or not Festool is providing any support to the shows now.  I did have a chance, several years ago, to talk to Tom Silva about Festool at the International Builders Show. He told me then that he had used another contractor friend's Festool sander and dust collector on a job and that he was so impressed by it that he went right out and got one of his own. That was his first Festool purchase and he told me that he had made a number of other black and green tool purchases since.

Festools on TOH is nothing new. If you go back through the historic episodes they are there at least 10 years ago, though often the name is not shown.

Just as an aside, on an Australian DIY program last night AEST [The Living Room], a participant was being shown how to cut Perspex Backsplash with a Ryobi Circular Saw * and a straight edge.

On seeing this Mrs Untidy said, "Surely that would be a lot easier and safer with your tracksaw and rail!"  [big grin]

* Paid product placement by sponsoring Hardware Chain.

Was watching an old episode the other day, and Tom & Norm were using a Festool TS - at the end of the episode 'Festool Track Saw' came up with the other sponsors. They use a lot of Festool, and it all looks well used - Kapex, routers, Domino, drills etc.
As well as Festool, they use a lot of interesting gear - I've seen Tom drill shelf pin holes with some sort of 'duo doweller', that locks into a rail at 32mm intervals, much like the LR 32.

Yes the new series is the Arlington house and the channel is Thisoldhouse on youtube  ;)
Episode 1 is there.

There appear to be no sponsor placement of tools within the show, even if they provide support for the program Tom Silvia has stated he uses his or his companies tools on the show. Now it could be possible a store has provided him with demos for a test run, but since there are more and more, I expect Tom has bought the tools.

Several years ago Bob Marino told me that is not the case. Tommy Silva insists on buying all his own tools. That way his doesn't feel compelled to give them a plug on the show, which I've never seen him do.

Here's post of Bob's from 2011:

I know it is partly a "dealer's sales" post, and it may sound like bragging (which it kinda is), but the recollections are not correct. Springtime in 2004-2005, I along with my Manager, introduced Tom to the Festool tools. Up to that point, he had never heard, let alone handled, the Festool line of tools. Fast forward to the summer of that year, and we did another demo (rather my new  manager did - I did the intros) with Tom and some crew. It was a different time, almost a different world - Internet wise and  Festool was very unknown. I did post the pics a while ago though.
I simply thought that it would be a great idea and great for Festool to have Tom and TOH be introduced to the tools. I was certain, that once he/they had them in hands they would be wowed - and they were. I simply cold called from the White Pages and got lucky.

Hey Joe,

Good memory and record keeping. Yes, we did 2 demos, the first one with just Tom and the second one with Tom's brother, Dickie and his crew. All were impressed, but I think the most memorable moment was when Tom used the pre Trion PS2E jigsaw  and said "this saw's got ba..s."

Watched Ask This Old House today and Tom did something I have never seen before. He virtually gave a woodworking show demo of the TS saw, showing the plunge feature and the Festool label on both the saw and the rail, PROMINENTLY. I was cracking up and my wife asked me what was so funny. I opined that someone at Stanley/DeWalt must have pissed him off.

The TV woodworking "experts will soon lose credibility if they don't use the best tools available and Festool has set the bar pretty high for the competition with tools like the Domino Joiners and Track Saws.  I have even now seen Festool tools showing up on the Fine Woodworking Online and magazine and that took way too long for me since I respect their publications even with their New England bias [wink]

I remember when the show first started  and Barry (Show host/reporter/builder) would get Dylan (his go to Tradesman) in to help with the work.  I always saw Dylan using Festool.... Drills, Tracksaw sanders etc.  Then the sponsors got in and all we see no wis Ryobi, and even Dylan now has to use the Ryobi.  Talk about sucking the fun out of his job.

Too funny! I was watching that today too and thought about this thread. Used his Ras to sand the threshold too.

I remember Norm using their drills years ago on NYW.

So did you feel he was a bit obvious in his display of the saw? Forgot about the RAS, another one of my favorites.

The name wasn't blanked out, but he didn't mention Festool at all. He even showed how to make a quick homemade track later for a regular circular saw. Tom just prefers Festool. That was my take.

I remember Rich Trethewey also using the C12 on several occasions. Tom also uses his Dewalt tools as beaters while doing the finishing work with Festools.
