I've just about run out of room but would really like a drum sander.  I have the RS 2E and wondered if it would do most of the work that a drum sander would accomplish.  Basically, they're both flat sanders and I realize the RS would take longer but the room the DS takes up is going to make it difficult to fit.

I don't know your situation, meaning pro or hobbyist or how much you use your drum sander etc.
When I need a drum sander I go use a shops near me I pay them a nominal fee. In the states the cabinets hops would charge something like $25 for a half hour. Which is enough time to run a couple of kitchens through including face frames.

Now that my American planer is inop I've been using the same shops planer to paying the same nominal fee.

I know this doesn't answer your question, but I'm offering alternatives. Depending on your locale. It may not help you much.

Hi,

I can't comment on the RS 2E but I bought a RO 150 when I got rid of my stroke sander due to lack of space available and while it is not as fast as the stroke sander it does a pretty good job of removing the mill marks and some of the other heavy sanding jobs the stroke sander did. I still have hopes of getting a small thickness belt sander one day [big grin]

My understanding of the RS 2E is it is more of a finishing sander but I have no experience with it.

In my experience drum sanders are very slow and finicky.

I bought one and after a few years I got rid of it - just too slow for me. When I need parts sanded to a uniform thickness I take them to a local cabinet shop to run through their sander. An hour's time on a wide belt sander can take care of cabinet doors, drawer fronts, what have you.
