I think when a product or line of products has an aesthetic/functional appeal that attracts people somewhat fanatically, it turns off some people in the general public.
Festool fandom IMHO is very similar to Apple fandom. Before Apple products were as ubiquitous as they are today, a small group of loyal customers sung their praises and happily paid high prices for what they believed to be superior products. Many on the "outside" were turned off by the high prices combined with the smug, superior attitude of the fans. You can do graphic design or edit film on a PC too, they said, costing half as much. But for Apple fans, there was a joy in using Apple machines beyond simply executing a computing task, and the extra cost was worth it to them.
Having once been an Apple fanboy (but now simply a user of Apple products), and now somewhat a Festool addict, the parallels both in the users and those who dislike/disagree are strikingly similar to me.
