I've never seen MFT top that cheap.

The Middle Earth currency conversion rate must be unfavourable just now  [wink]

If you go to the EvilBay and type in "MFT Top" you'll see that RS CNC Designs are selling 18mm moisture resistant Medite MDF tops for £40 - including six free CNC machined dogs.  Admittedly shipping is extra, but you could pick it up for free if passing Wrexham.  Not sure what the travel costs from Middle Earth might be though  [scared]

Yep, I just saw that, Spiff. It's insanely cheap, considering 6 aluminum dogs are included. I doubt he'll ship to Middle Earth.  [sad]

I meant to ask if you find Festool use to be hobbit forming?    [bite tongue] [drooling] [big grin]

Yes, and the system is quite compact, which works well in our small houses.

If you are a UK based user may I recommend RS CNC Design of Wrexham, Wales.http://www.cncdesign.co.uk/cnc/Replacement-Festool-Type-Top.html

Wow! That bloke is practically giving it away. I wonder how he manages to even make money on this.

I had the same thought so decided to pay a visit and was thoroughly impressed at the set up and the quality of the stuff he makes.

Rick runs a tight ship and combines a really superb product with value for money. The bench dogs are made by a chap next door to his workshop and they are beautifully machined and threaded underneath to lock onto the MFT top should you wish.

I had thought of doing my own tops with a suitable jig and my 20mm Zobo forstner bit but quite frankly I gave up out of sheer boredom and an total inability to drill straight. When I factored in the cost of a sheet of 18mm medite MDF and a jigamathig I thought bolleaux to this and bought from RS CNC. I have always used a sacrificial board when using my MFT's as the replacement tops were just too expensive but now I cut away with glee knowing that for 40 or so beer tokens I can get a brand new top (and a set of RicksDogs for gratis).

there is a new drill bit for Peters jig available from axminster,it will fit directly into both standard 1/4" hex and centrotec chucks and will solve the 'burr problem' that some people have encountered,it would be nice if the jig shipped with this new bit from now on,perhaps Peter would have some info on this?.

Hi [member=6803]skinee[/member]

Sorry for the delay but I had to do some checking first. This is a new cutter suited for Centrotec bit holders and is designed to work with the PGS. It is particularly suited to anyone who may be at risk getting burr marks on straight shanked bits. I have not tested this cutter yet and will produce a video in the not too distant future.

I understand that stop collars are now provided with these 20 mm cutters to help avoid them dropping through the 20 mm guide block and being damaged on the floor.

I really liked the concept, and thought about doing something on my own. However, if I fooled around with pricing the bits and pieces and cobble something together, I would not save much and have the headache of its not the real deal. So I ordered mine at the end of the month and got it yesterday. It was quickly shipped ~8 days from order date to delivery in metro Atlanta. It was well packed and no damage. I am really looking forward using it and finally building a custom Festool table.
Thanks so much for such a great idea Peter!!

to spend forty quid on eBay for a CNC produced third party MFT top - especially when the jig is three times that cost.  Nice idea for them that can be bothered though, I guess.

I'm getting in on this thread several months late. The beauty of this stem is you can also produce custom size tops as well as custom hole patterns.

Check out a Toolify YouTube video on homemade jig for making an MFT top using the LR32 system.
