So after many years of talking, dreaming and planning, I finally have my own workshop built. I’ve been doing woodworking since I was a teenager in one way or another. Whether it was making picture frames or toy boxes, to roofing, home building. But it seemed everything I did, it always led me back to building some type of cabinet for somebody.
When my wife and I first got married almost 25 years ago, our first home had no place for any type of shop, I ended up using my parents garage, since all my stuff was still stored there. It worked for the time being, but, eh.
Then we took the plunge and built our current house about 15 years ago, with enough property, that I could build a garage for a workshop. And it’s worked great, but I’ve just gotten to the point where I’ve outgrown it, and it would be nice to have my truck parked back in the garage. I mean, I know a 26’ x 26’ garage is a dream for many people, but do to my love of machinery, and room to move around, and thanks to a huge snowstorm 2 years ago. Where I tore down all my workbenches and jammed everything I had, so I had enough room to fit my truck in the garage. My wife then went out to her car, walked back into the house, and said I needed my own workshop....WHAT??!! Ya she actually said that, lol.
That finally got me to seriously start planning what I wanted. I knew the type of building I wanted, because they are built very quickly, and very cost effective. Not sure what everyone else around the globe calls this style of building, but here in eastern Pennsylvania, we call them pole buildings. I kept kicking around idea after idea how and where I wanted this thing, and wasn’t sure how big I could go or wanted to go. So a couple phone calls to the municipal department, and my wife once again telling me just put up what I want, so I am not adding on again in a few years, she knows me to well. So I went for it and got everything rolling for a 40’ x 30’ with 12’ ceilings. Once I had all my permits and all that fun stuff it was December, and the way the winter started with the cold weather I figured I wouldn’t see this building started till spring time. But a sudden thaw in late January, the company called and said they’d be out the following week to start!
Well it’s taken a month in real time, but actually only about 4 1/2 days to complete my shop, floor and all. Just have a final inspection to get through yet, then it’s time to start the inside. Here’s a few pictures to start with. More to come.
