Horizontal walnut with 1/2 aluminum reveals. Still needs something done with the hearth and 60" t.v. installed. Small niche is a pocket for articulating arm t.v. mount to recess into. Also, still trying to decide on what material(non combustible) to wrap fire box opening with , to satisfy local code of 12" clearance .  I'm really happy with the end result, but the method I used to build it was all wrong . Let me just say, I used a ton of t-88 epoxy

Really great combination of materials!  I'd like to know more about the aluminum pieces.  Extrusion, or formed/cut by you?

Thanks for comments...this project turned out great but I seemed to fight it the entire time. Problem #1- my layout was wrong, top piece of walnut is 3/4 wider than the rest. And ended up with small rip at bottom. I made last minute change and didn't realize it would change original lay out.
Problem # 2-  I should have ordered aluminum reveal that's designed for wood panel to seat inside of channel. I picked up regular 1/2" aluminum "U shaped" channel , because that was readily available.
 Here's a pic of my very sticky and frustrating method . It was really challenging lining up aluminum quickly while epoxy set. And trying to not get epoxy on face of walnut or bleed out was stressful . To make it more difficult ,every walnut rip bowed after being cut to width.

Easy to do, made it enough times myself.

Ahhh, I understand. Thanks for the great diagrams and explanation. It came out well.

Love it, thats exactly my style.  Did you domino or biscuit the walnut returns ?
I would be going for a black granite myself.
