Here's the fireplace mantle I made for our home. I used solid cherry for most of it, with the exception of the two plywood panels that're behind the split turnings. Speaking of the turning, that was the most challenging aspect of the project, because I'm not a serious turner. The marble was cut to my spec's at a local stone supplier; it as made from leftover material from a kitchen they'd done a while back, which made it much cheaper to get. The finish process was: sand to 400 grit; 1 coat of waterborne blonde shellac sprayed on; sand to 400 again to cut the "nubbies" raised by the waterborne shellac; oil-based stain allowed to dry overnight; 3 coats waterborne pre-cat lacquer.
