Here's the fireplace mantle I made for our home.  I used solid cherry for most of it, with the exception of the two plywood panels that're behind the split turnings.  Speaking of the turning, that was the most challenging aspect of the project, because I'm not a serious turner.  The marble was cut to my spec's at a local stone supplier; it as made from leftover material from a kitchen they'd done a while back, which made it much cheaper to get.  The finish process was: sand to 400 grit; 1 coat of waterborne blonde shellac sprayed on; sand to 400 again to cut the "nubbies" raised by the waterborne shellac; oil-based stain allowed to dry overnight; 3 coats waterborne pre-cat lacquer.

Nice work!  The arch and the details really make the difference in my opinion.  It wood have looked great without the arch, but now - WOW.

Nice job!  Looks beautiful!  Sets off the floor tones nicely.

Just curious, why the prefin floor?  Less mess or existing?

Very tidy job. I like the level of detail work - not too fiddly. Well done  [wink]

Bob,
I used prefinished hardwood because of my lack of experience with unfinished flooring and the quick and relatively easy installation it offers.

Awesome indeed.  Curious, what did the marble set you back?

Ben,

The marble was done by a granite company we've dealt with before.  The carerra marble was a leftover piece from a previous kitchen they'd done, so it cost $100, including the cutting to my design, polishing and chamfering the edges I specified.
