First Large Project - crib for granddaughter

This was my first large project -- undertaken without really knowing what I was doing, except that I wanted to "start woodworking".  I wanted this project to be done without any screws/nails, except that I'd have to use bolts for the side rails.  Along the way, I learned about this Festool addiction... first was a Domino... and a CT Mini... and a Sander... and a Jigsaw...  this was one expensive crib!

I didn't do any progress pictures, because they would have been quite ugly.

So, without further adieu... here it is...

Wow - Lots of nice details and wonderful finish.  Really nice job with the natural walnut.  Spindles into curves are a challenge and you did very well.

Congrats on the project and your first post.  And welcome to the FOG

Wow, incredible! that will be in your family for generations!

Love your "branding"  [smile]

Incredible job!  I am going to go off topic and I hope you will not mind.  You have skills you don't know you have.  Take time to develop them and never forget to have fun.  You rock dude!

wow i don't think i could have gotten this result with one of my first projects! The wood looks truly beautiful but walnut being relatively toxic, can someone confirm it is ok in this form and function? Just to be on the safe side!

edit, apparently only the dust and shaving are harmful, the solid wood is safe for humans except for allergic people.

What an awesome gift. I have the crib my dad built for me and my 4 siblings years ago. It was used for my children and will passed on to my grandchildren. That's what is priceless about woodworking vs. buying. It means even more to me now that I lost my dad a year ago.

How did you make the great wooden label?

My wife gave them to me for my birthday this year.  She must've been expecting a lot of projects -- she got me 12 of them!  If you would like, I can get the link to their site for you.

Thanks for all the kind words.  It's nice to get a nod of approval!  The project certainly gave me the confidence to move forward with some other projects that I never thought I'd do.

If this is the standard of your first project, what's will you do next? A Chippendale secretary??  ;D

Its a very fine piece of work. I really like the Grandpa badge you have put on it. You should be very proud of yourself to put your name on it [thumbs up]
