I'm new here. I'm a guy who's just getting interested in doing things for himself--fixing my kids toys, building tree house, modifying treehouse with cool kid-ideas like fireman pole and pulley system etc. Fixing anything broken around the house, watching videos to learn or getting a friend's help, etc. But I can see myself building a whole office for myself in the future, install windows, a deck, a fence, etc. The CXS seems like an obvious choice, but I don't want to need something more powerful any time soon. I'm not a tool collector--yet, anyway. I was thinking C or T 15. What do you guys think? I know I could get a Makita or Milwaukee but I'm drawn to the versatility of Festool. Thanks.

I don't own or have I tested a CXS so I can't comment on that.  I have C12 plenty of power for any job you would ever throw at.

First let me say  [welcome] to FOG, You are going to be happy to be on board here.

I have the C15 and the CXS and I have found them to be my drills of choice for my Cabinet Making and Installation work. I will say I use the CXS for most everything now as it has become my go to drill for sure

First choice: T/C15
future complement: CXS
Although my CXS sees more use, when i go on site i only take my T15 with me to keep it simple, as it can handle any task. I would avoid the 12V class should you have any future plans on buying a second drill. Because you will then face the dilemma of choosing between a slightly less powerful but more comfortable CXS, or a slightly more powerful T15.

Welcome to the FOG Mostel!

+1 for the C12, I'd recommend getting the set.  The versatility is awesome when needed and you'll be glad you have it.

You might want to go to a retail outlet if possible and see which one works better for you, the weight, balance, etc.

Good luck on your decision Mostel.

For what you are describing I would go for the C or T 15

Doing things around tree houses you will likely be driving long screws & that will soon drain the CXS.  I would say my C15 gets most use, followed by the C12's.  CXS would prob be my least used drill if I'm to be totally honest but I'm doing Joinery/Construction for a living so my need's are different to yours.

Still a great little drill though, just don't expect too much of it.

Oh, welcome by the way  [big grin]

Hi,

Welcome to the FOG!  [smile]

If you are going to go with a Festool drill, and have it be the one drill to use for everything , then go for a C or T as opposed to the CXS.  The CXS is great and is much less expensive , but the others are more versatile. The C and T drills will have the umph (the CXS does have tons of power for its size though) to do all your  jobs and you  can use all of the different chucks on them.

Aside from building a tree house, what sort of broken kids toys need a power tool (big or little)?

A tree house (made out of pine logs?)

When you say "build an office" - do you mean the actual building or are you fitting out a room?

I ask, because these are potentially significant construction projects and you'll be looking for high power, making a T15 sized drill a minimum choice.

[welcome] btw [big grin]

Well, my thinking a few months ago was that since I have a corded Milwaukee for high torque applications what I wanted was something with versatility at a moderate price rather than going for the max torque at a higher price.

I ruled out the CSX because the chucks are not usable with the other Festool drills, and the chuck capacity is kinda limited.

I found that there are some T-12 kits in the older style systainers for sale at a good price, so I went with that. The number is Festool 564247. So for a hobbyist anyway who doesn't care about having an old style systainer in his collection I think this is a really good driver/drill. Google tells me some of these older kits are still available.

I've been quite happy with it. The Li ion batteries are great, and the drill handles far better than the PC it replaced. And the Milwaukee hasn't been out of the box since since I bought this.

Appreciate the feedback. As far as fixing toys, I meant all the assembling of toys these days from bicycles to you name it. As far as would I build an office from ground up, not sure yet. Today? No. A year or two from now, maybe. I have a nearby authorized Fes dealer so I'll see these in person tomorrow I hope. the C or T 15 seems to make the most sense, but after I handle the tools, I'll report back to you guys. I have a lot to learn, so I'll be reading here often. I'm glad to be a part of this community!
