I am in the beginning process of making some fixed louvered shutters for around my house. I would like to make perhaps 10-12. Perhaps someone can shed some light on a problem I am having with the fixed louvered shutters. The mortices don't seem to line up evenly. As a matter of fact, I am finding that the first mortice I make on each stile, putting them side by side and measuring the mortices in relation to each other, they seem to be off a bit. Perhaps 1/10? off. I checked if the placement pins were equal distance from the edge of the Domino and they seem to be OK. . In order to line the first mortices up on each stile, I put a stop block for the pin, making sure it was the same distance for each stile. Have tried to do this a number of times and I am still having a problem. I am using a 6mm bit on the domino and the narrowest setting for the mortice. My idea is to use a louver approximately an inch wide, and 1/4" thick. In order to get the louvers to fit into the mortice, I plan on notching the louvers on my router. I have tried this and it works perfectly. I then plan on planing each stile so that it is just about even with the louver. This will give me a stile slightly more than 5/8" thick. I like oak and will probably be using that for the entire project.
I hope someone out there can shed some light on this.
