Giving my assembly table MFT-like capabilities

Ok, let's get this out of the way first:  I'm not going to buy a MFT.

But I would like some of that functionality in my assembly table, which is a 4'x4' flip-down rolling table.  The top is 2 layers of 3/4" MDF.  I'm torn how to go about doing this...firstly whether I would like to commit to a 20mm or 3/4" hole grid.  My table employs the Kreg Klamp system for workholding from above, but I want the flexibility that a properly-aligned grid of holes gives.  I also want the ability to use some form of workholding clamp that leaves the surface completely free for sanding (e.g. Festool Clamping Elements or Veritas Wonder Dog). 

Would the Clamping Elements even work with a tabletop that is 1.5" thick?

I know there are many threads about making your own MFT.  I don't have a LR32 or even a Festool router, but I imagine some sort of DIY LR32 + 20mm router bit should do the trick.

Any general thoughts on the subject would be appreciated.

 
You can see in this thread how i made my top before i had the LR32 system.

I don't know how two layers of 18mm mdf will affect the clamping possibilities, best is to do a test and see if the track clamps can still get through 2 layers. The flat clamping elements will pose no problem.

other than that i have a separate assembly table and a workbench with mft top, my assembly table has a part with 20mm holes for the downdraft function which combines nicely with the clamping function. in some occasions i wish it had more holes, but most of the time i am happy that i hava a nice worksurface without holes as well, especially for assembly work with hardware and screws etc...

So if you have no other workbench then it might be a good idea not to cover it entirely with holes.
 
I would go with 20mm holes. You can get away with using the Veritas dogs in 20mm holes (just about) but the clamping elements will not work in 3/4" holes.

The clamping elements will work in thick tops but you won't be able to screw them in from below (but nobody uses those knobs anyway).
 
You can use the clamping elements without their knobs, but you can also pop open the knobs with a screwdriver and put in a longer bolt. There is another issue with your thick top. You won't be able to insert the Festool guide rail clamps in the holes to provide hold-down functionality. In my opinion, you would be better off with 3/4-inch holes. Lee Valley has a number of products that provide horizontal clamping as well as hold-down capabilities that work better with 3/4-inch. These "clamping elements" provide more reach, so you won't need as many holes. After you drill your first one through all that MDF, you'll appreciate that!
