GoDaddy threat December 29, 2011

SOPA is idiotic. The only people who will benefit from it are those that it is supposed to protect us from. SOPA violates (y)our constitutional right to free speech.
On the other hand, threats should be ignored.

GoDaddy changed their position from supporting SOPA to not supporting SOPA after great pressure from their customers. The are STILL not on record as opposing SOPA.

This is not acceptable to me so I will not be a customer of theirs in the future.

Even though this is confirmed, Anonymous may still shut them down temporarily to make a point or as a slap on the wrist.  Just be prepared as the FOG may go down that day.  Shane is aware.

I would hope GoGaddy is using something like Amazon S3 or some other massive cloud infrastructure to host their sites. If not, yeah, they are gonna be easy pickins.

I have 12 or more domains with GoDaddy.  I don't give into cyber bullies / terrorists / criminals / evangelists/ lobbyists/  etc.

I stopped being force fed as an infant and have no desire to have another group decide for me - except for the FOG  [thumbs up].

SOPA is exactly that what you say you don't give in to.

But those who want to threaten to interfere behind those masks are those that I want controlled.

I don't do politics.  I live my life trying to make things better for others.  I try not to interfere with others' lives unless asked and hope that others will do the same.

Having someone come in and potentially cause more work for me will not convince me to support their position.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Since you are not hosted by GoDaddy it's very unlikely that you would be affected by an attack on GoDaddy. Your DNS records are served by the root name server infrastructure which is about as robust a thing as exists on this planet. MAYBE a concerted military attack by a superpower could take that down.

The only thing GoDaddy does for you is occasionally update a database record in the Whois database.

Now if Anonymous said they were going to attack 1and1 I'd say you might have a bit of trouble. But that's not being discussed.

GoDaddy is STILL on record as supporting PIPA, the Senate version of SOPA.

andvari,

Just to let you know, the FOG has gone down before due to GoDaddy.  As Shane said to me earlier, he can't control ISP attacks.  They happen, you deal with it.  Then you get even!  [big grin]

Ken, I don't know that the FOG has gone down as a result of GoDaddy before. It has gone down because of our web hosting providers in the past. We do not host with GoDaddy. As was said, if GoDaddy goes down, it shouldn't affect our site because DNS is propagated throughout the web on root servers and various forms of redundancy.

I'm not sweating it. A website going offline for reasons outside of my control is not something I can lose sleep over.

I feel the level of cyber terror threat being talked about borders on silliness. Possibly a group of narks watching too much terminator  [big grin]

BTW and just in case, if the machines do take over in the future - let's hope it's Festool and not Ryobi ...

[not worthy]

Seriously I hope it's Ryobi. With them we would have a chance of overthrowing their empire. With Festool, forget it.
