Hi

I'm off to London for a couple of days. I am going to stay in the Greenwich area and spend time around central London. Is there a good tool-store around there where I can find a decent selection of router-bits and more? I would also like to know what brands of bits I should get or avoid. Most of the time you can tell by the price but please advice me.

My knowledge of London is limited, but I can't imagine there will be anything like you imagine in terms of tool shops in close proximity to Greenwich or central London. It's a shame you're not looking for sub-par steaks pretending to be genuine Scottish reared beef or a union flag daubed model of tower bridge, you can get them no problem.

Hope I'm wrong, but I very much doubt that's the thing you'll find in either of those places or in between. Like most Countries now, we do things mail order, and mail order shops are normally located where business rates and premises are cheap, outside city centres. Apart from Toolstation and Screwfix who are there for the basics and more, but in terms of router bits, they only sell tat. Enjoy the trip though.

Oh, and avoid ANYTHING with Silverline written on it. Anything!

If a retailer delivers to a hotel, I would be extremely surprised. That would flag up fraudulent activity unfortunately.

I've had stuff sent to Disney while I was in Florida (thanks Mr Halle :) )

I've also heard of lots of members here having stuff delivered to them here in the UK while staying in hotels.

I've never had problems delivering to hotels, but I always call the hotel in advance to let them know something's coming.

Any reason why you are looking at router bits in particular?

I know you are in Sweden but for the NA folks, Lee Valley sell some good router bits and they are offering free shipping this week. In the UK, workshop heaven is also offering free shipping at the moment.

I take it back then, things must have moved on. It used to be a well known scam in the olden days. Using a stolen card to deliver to an unverifiable address.

I have had problems even recently with some retailers refusing to send the first order to anything but the card holder's address.

Thanks for all replies.

The reason why I'm looking for router bits is because I'm planning to buy the OF2200 soon. I will trade the 12mm collet thet comes in the set for a half inch one. There seems to be a wider selection of half inch bits rather then 12mm and a lot cheaper in the UK. As for delivery if I order them, I got friends outside of London in Weybridge. Maybe there is a store close to there?
I spotted that Axminster wasn't too expensive on delivery to Sweden but I don't know if their bits are any good? It sounds like their "Axcaliber" bits is something branded exclusive to them? Does anyone have any experience of those? How is Axminster to do bussiness with?

I think they are excellent. I phoned them up a week ago and said I wasn't happy with a product I bought over six months ago. It was more a case of not finding it to be suitable rather than it being faulty. They let me return it for a full refund on the basis that they wanted me to be happy with it. They also refunded my postage costs. I have bought loads of stuff from them and always found them to be very good.

Try London power tools, they are in surrey quays, just up the road from Greenwich, not a huge range but not bad for central (ish) London

Toucan tools are over the river in Leyton, bigger range of kit but a bit further away, would be a struggle on public transport.

But more importantly check out the greenwich union pub for great locally brewed beer!

I might skip getting the bits whilst there and order by mail instead.
Sounds better to spend some time in the pub.  [smile]

I'm not going to ask for advise on a good local pub in the London area, then this thread is going to be flooded on tips.  [big grin]

Not to familiar with London, but D&M tools and Toucan tools have a good variety of router bits.

Toucan, has the largest festool display Ive seen.

They have festools that I havent seen before.

Toolfix has a good supply to and excellent customer service.

They are a bit away from London near Peterboro

Another recommendation for Axminster Tools from me!!!!

I have brought a lot of tools from them over the last few years and have always had excellent service.

Their own range of Blades/Cutters (Axcaliber) seem fine, although I can only vouch for a few Router cutters and Bandsaw blades as these are the only blades I have bought from them.

About to order my Parf Dogs from them for my MFT3, which I also got from them.

Hope you enjoy your trip to London Viking!

Tim.
