Good woodworking projects for kids

Shane,

Bird houses, best book is " Designer Birdhouses by Richard T Banks ". He is an architect who likes bird and woodworking. Both of my daughters have built some of his models. They all start with the basic box and you can then add any type of details you want. The best part is that management really likes them.

When I was 9, lumber yards still gave away shorts of pine.  I made my grandmother a one-step stool wit 5 parts.  Two V-cut legs, two stringers let into the legs and the top.

I later made my 5th grade teacher a desktop angled bookrack.  The shelf was angled about 10 degrees and dadoed into the sides.  I cut the dadoes with a handsaw and chisel.

We only had hand tools back in the "dark ages" of the 1960s.  The "hottest" tool in the shop was a Yankee screwdriver.  [big grin]

Cordless before cordless was a word.  Green.  Cool. I have a few push drills myself.

The Yankee still hangs on the pegboard over my Dad's workbench.  I spent many enjoyable hours there after school while I was growing up.  I just was thinking that I should photograph that before it is gone.  My Dad has passed away, but my Mom still lives there and has many of his tools.  She may have to move to smaller quarters in the next few years.

...In fact, I believe that the most popular project ever has been the biplane shelves that were made for three different grandchildren and that they helped me to assemble.  This project is described in the thread:

I was waiting for you to chime in here Frank.  This is one of my favorite projects on the forum... [thumbs up]

Thanks Bryce, obviously it is one of my favourites too.

Yeah, I figured he would too, Brice. Frank does have some good projects he's done for his grandchildren.

Thanks Shane.  And for is good but for and with is better.

I like to build things that my son actually wants when we do projects together.

Just recently we made a "Wand Rack" to display his collection of Harry Potter wands.  We've made boxes, bookshelves, and other little projects that he actually uses all the time and he is very proud of.

I think that is the key, we build things he would have wanted anyway.

Shane,

Besides all of the good project ideas so far, maybe you and Zac could also make a project/gift together for Zac's mom for the holidays?

Thanks, Ken. That was one of my ideas. My wife really loves boxes of all types. Maybe a project to build a very small chest of drawers with maybe three or four drawers that are 3 or 4 inches square. He will enjoy using the Domino and I don't mind him running that, sanders, and the like.

I built an indoor rabbit hutch for my 2 boys, which they helped with.  I will take some pics & post here.

Hey, it is not just Dads but us Grand parents that like to do projects with there grand kids.  Here are two photos of one of my grand sons after we built a wooden truck and a bird house. He loves using the power screw driver.

Hey, two of my grandchildren and I just got in from 'Shed #2" about 15 minutes ago where, we too, are building an indoor rabbit hutch.  It should be finished by Sunday and, I too, will post photos.

Here is some pics of ours.

It is open topped & both doors are hinged to allow easy cleaning & let the bunnys out to run around.  There is a ramp at each end going up to a balcony which works really well.  They dart around it like a race track, but unfortunately they start about 11pm  [mad]

Anyway, nothing fancy but we had fun making it & the wabbits love it.

Woodguy.

Oh yea, nice work Frank  [thumbs up]

I like your design and we might borrow from and build a ramp and ledge to fit into the larger compartment of our hutch.
