Grinder for Wood

I bought a huge chunk of Cypress to turn for a gift. The wood has some bumps and protruding knobs that I’d like to remove before turning the bowl.

Is there a grinder that would let me quickly remove the offending wood?

It depends on what you have available.  Bandsaw?  Reciprocating saw?  Pruning saw (ala Silky or something similar)?

Festool RAS 115 with P24 paper would eat that up.

As stated above, 24 grit and the RAS 115 is an awesome combo

Any cheap grinder and the coarsest abrasive disk will do the job if you don’t mind the mess.

I’d use a portable power plane instead.

In the uk there are plenty of "chain saw" type blades that fit into a 4" grinder. That would be the easiest and quickest way. And much more pleasant than sandpaper on a grinder that will fill your world clouds upon clouds of fine dust..

Just use that thing with your FULL concentration! Dangerous tools!

Fiber disc attachment and abrasive would be the cheapest, but I second the investment in a Kutzall or Galahad disc to pair with the grinder.

RAS is a bit slower, but generates less of a mess with the DC capabilities.

I am no bowl turner so I really don’t know the answer to this but why wouldn’t you just chuck up the piece and remove the protrusions with a roughing gouge?

If the general diameter of the rough blank is already close to maximum swing of the lather the extraneous protrusions will prevent it from turning. I just knock them off with a power plane on the lathe. Chip size is similar.

If the protrusions are rather large, I'd use a Sawzall. Less mess

Smaller protrusions would be good fodder for the RAS + Saphir or a RA grinder + Kutzall/Galahad.
